The new 1.6 SIDI Turbo engine completes and tops the gasoline engine offer in the Zafira Tourer. It joins the 85 kW/115 hp naturally aspirated 1.8-liter and the two 1.4 Turbo engine versions with 88 kW/120 hp and 103 kW/140 hp.

This is likely the engine coming to the sonic for its mid cycle refresh, probably for model year 2016.

The cruze is getting its own 1.6 turbo, not the engine cited here, but also sourced from Opel. The cruze refresh coming model year 2015.

A lot of consumers do not realize that starting in 2015 and increasing in 2017 all car makers have to raise their level of CAFE to average 40mpg on highway or the maker pays fines per vehicle made and it gets expensive.

So all car makers are due for significant engine modifications for 2016 model year cars and newer, possibly starting for model year 2015.

Another thing that will be interesting in the near future is whether trade in values for cars made pre 2015 will be worth anything or if consumer equity in their current cars and trucks plummets to zero.

That the 2016 model year cars will be so great an improvement over previous model year cars that consumers as a whole will dump their current rides in order to obtain the new ones. (All intimations of sarcasm intended.)

...... We will see. Diesel trucks have gone more down hill the newer they get ( stock of course).

The current CAFE culminates in the 2016 model year with some pretty stringent requirements but no so extreme as can not be met. I should have but a sarcasm icon at the end of my above comment. Value depreciation of new cars is a well discussed phenomenon in nearly every car forum I have joined including this one. Newly purchased cars plummet down in value just as the front wheel touch the street exiting the dealership.

What do you mean by that last statement about consumer equity?

Consumer equity means that even though a car is a liability, there is value in the object and this aides the new purchase, which is generally realized at time of trade in or sell.

For instance, if you buy a car for $10,000 and it drops in value $1000 a year, but you pay it off your loan in 5 years, you built equity, or value because the car is worth $5000 after you pay it off. So when you sell or trade in, you have a net offset of cash flow even with the liability. While the total bill was $10,000 and you only sold for $5000, equity occurred because your old car aided in purchase of the new car-- you didn't build equity in the old car, you built it in the new car, with the value of the old.

Anyway, as late model 90s SUV owners learned in the early 2000s, sometimes the market demand changes so drastically that value of the equity is zero. Essentially no one, not even dealer trades or whole sale buyers to third world countries, will purchase the liability from the owner. And the owner is left with a paper weight.

Recall a few weeks ago when the EPA and car makers won a huge battle forcing the above fact.

What people outside of California don't know is... what happens to owners who fail to meet standards. They pay a gross polluter and gas guzzler tax. This can equate to thousands of dollars a year due at time of registration. Interestingly, this proposal was generated during the Bush administration and finally adopted in Obama's.

Essentially, consumers may have to purchase new cars by 2017 as their current models become economically undrivable. And this doesn't even consider rising fuel prices that are likely to increase to over $7 a gallon once our new and awesome frac methods dry up as expected in 5 years.

It has nothing to do with GM making a magic and amazing car. It has more to do with realities and changing dynamics of living in an over populated world with dwindling finite resource pools.

I am not aware that owners who fail to meet standards will pay additional taxes unless the owner is registering a new car as the first retail owner. I have completed several searches seeking corroboration of this allegation with no success. Please post links so I can assess this info.

On a different car forum I have posted my reasons why Chevrolet will offer a fixed roof 5.3 cid Corvette for the 2016 model year. If your contention has a foundation, based on my interpretation of the statement, that would mean no Corvette after the 2016 model year. Of course, that would assure the continuation of the Sonic as we know it. Talk about mixed feelings!
