Lowering Without Springs?

And I happen to know somebody with 4 stock springs in his garage.

i wonder how much a set of stock springs would be as compared to a set of drop springs. I know cutting the springs isn't the best way to drop your ride but if you know what your doing (cut a half a coil at a time not 2" of the coil...) it isn't a bad way to drop your car on the cheap. if i had another set of stock springs to try it out on i'd give it a go.

i dont see how cutting a spring would increase its stiffness, unless it is a progressive rate spring.
lets say spring rate is 100lbs per inch (arbitrary #) if you compress it 1in it has a force of 100lbs stored in it. 2"=200lbs of force, 6in=600lbs of force and so on. but thats as the spring compresses.
i'm not following how cutting it would change that 100lbs per inch as the spring is not being compressed?
if i'm wrong so be it, but i'm just not seeing a connection between cutting and compressing. not trying to be an ass just trying to understand the logic

You're making it over complicated. An eight foot long bar is stiffer than a ten foot long bar of the same material. A spring is just a bar that has been wound into a coil. As you remove material (or coils in this case), it gets stiffer.
Find a race shop in your area with a coil spring tester and take a random junkyard spring in. Put it in the tester as is and measure its rate. Cut a coil off and measure it again. It will be stiffer.

can anyone snap a pic of the stock springs front/rear depending on the type/style of the spring would determine if we could cut them or not.
i have a feeling they are pigtail style springs like this
which do not work well when cut.
on the other hand if they are a Tangential spring like the one below we are in business.

That is an interesting way at looking at it, A little more research on the topic yields this information cutting springs Which in a way backs up theenico's theory

The oem springs look like the first picture and do not look like the second.

I figured they where going to be pig tail springs which you should not cut for a drop, they will not sit in the perch correctly and will screw up the mounts.
Funny stuff !! They are all over my city, there's a right way to lower a car and a wrong way, DON'T ever heat your springs or cut them, you will look like a clown bouncing down the street

There is a right way to cut springs, and there is the way ricers do them. start with small cut's about an 1/8th to a 1/4 of a coil at a time keep putting them in and pulling them out until you get the desired drop but no more than 1 and 1/2 coils should be removed.

The stock springs are indeed progressive (pig tail) springs.
