here is my stupid Q of the day in regards to the zzp kit...I looked at it, but what about the brake master cylinder? is the stock one enough? 399 seems like a great deal, but it seems like there is something missing, as in where do the brake lines feed into....

I believe someone has already confirmed that all trims use the same MC, so stock for stock it will be.

I believe the lines just replace the hard lines that go into the drum with the flexible ones.

Sorry for my ignorance, ive avoided drum brakes with a passion, ever since I turned my first wrench I have never done a drum brake replacement. I was under the impression it was just a hard wired cable for ebrake only. these drums run on brake fluid also? I am more inclined to know about our car not others ;-p

I find it slightly humorous that one can be so passionate about something that they have no knowledge of. Yes, drum brakes "run on" brake fluid.

Honest to god truth, never dealt with them. just my own stupidity to never looking at how they really function. My S10 needs them replaced...haven't done it yet...bought the kit saw all the parts and put the box on the shelf. But yet I tore the top half of the motor off to replace those ****ty gaskets under the intake manifold along with the valve cover gaskets...

I appreciate the responses on my questions, helped alot.

I'm not sure how you can tell that the brake shoes need replaced if you haven't had them apart. Again, I'm not sure what all the parts in the kit are (I would think shoes). In my experience, however, it is pretty difficult to wear down the shoes in rear drums, and often bleeding the brake lines to replace all the old fluid with fresh will breathe new life into them that you never knew they had.

well, i got the truck with 12k and now im over 120k and I never replaced them once and the ebrake doesnt engage any more, logic leads one to believe the shoes and probably the drums are toast.

and yes I should more likely than not, replace the fluid..I was only ever anal about this stuff on my prelude, my truck i gave 2 ****s about unless it was something dire and broke and needed immediate attention.

I digress and sorry for getting way off topic.

Back on topic, I went to the dealer and looked up the parts information.

According to him the part numbers for the following items are all the same between all Sonic trim models, including the RS:

Master Cylinder- 95229905 - $132.90
Proportioning Block- 95230592 - $360.80
ABS Control Module- 95176124 - $259.92
Wheel Bearing- 13500488
Hub

He also said that the brake lines all showed the same as well

Now, for what is listed as different:

Calipers- 133008883 - 133008884 - $250 per side (E-brake built in)
Rotors were $80 apiece, sorry no p/n
E-brake cable- 95479538 $30.43

Which would total out to $690+tax from the dealer, not including pads.

Unless you can get a helluva price from your local dealer or can find the parts used, the ZZP kit is not only cheaper but appears to have better rotors and come with pads as well.

Maybe this has been asked, but I didn't see a proportioning block with the zzp kit. Doesn't that direct the amounts of fluid/pressure to each brake? If so, would a disk need greater pressure than a drum, and is ZZP just swaping the actual drum/pads with calipers/rotors but not allocating any more pressure to the rears.?. Not sure if that would make any difference at all...

Would it be too much pressure and the rears lock too easily, or not enough where you're not getting the full effect..?.

But damn, that price is just right and rear disc brakes are so much lovelier! (but I'd need slotted fronts too though...)

Like I said, the GM dealer confirmed that the prop block P/N for the RS and non-RS Sonic. Thus, GM is using the same ones, why wouldn't ZZP. It appears ZZP may be using the stock RS rear calipers in the kit anyways, but that's not been confirmed/denied.

As for the pressures/volumes of fluid, different volumes/pressures would change the way the rear acts, but you would have to find an adjustable block (which I don't even know if one would exist) install it, and test different setups for yourself.

IMO, outside of a racing application, leave it be.

yeah, I know the feeling

it depends on which route you go for the rear disc swap though. The ZZP kit has drilled/slotted rotors and stainless steel lines, so depending on the quality of the pads there's really not much else you can do to improve performance much

although you could improve all the above things if you did an RS swap

I will be buying this by the end of the week, but since I run 15's zzp does not know if it will fit so they gave me a no questions asked return policy to test them out with the 15's

That is good to know the hubs are the same, when I was pricing these parts looking at diagrams it was hard to tell.

The ZZP kit would be nice but the slotted rear rotors would look silly with stock fronts.
