I disagree.
Very often I find my self in traffic crawling at 5mph and the only way to drive in that is in 1st. You wouldn't slow down from 50 to 0 to shift into first and then go back up to 5mph when traffic never actually stopped completely.

Are all of you aware that a grinding doesn't necessarily mean that the driver is shifting incorrectly? And that NOT ALL Sonics are affected by the TSB? thus not everyone will experience the 1st-2nd grind when shifting properly although some drivers will, yes even when shifting properly.

this morning it was about 31 degrees outside, I have redline trans fluid in it, and going about 15mph I shifted into second and it gave me hell, and grinded really bad. I wonder if the redline is too thick? anyone else have this problem?

I spoke to the my service adviser the other day about switching to redline, He said it should not be an issue but would wait till after winter because it could make the grind worse until it's broken in and winter would be a bad time to do so.

My dealer, the one that was willing to go the extra mile and find the TSB listed, called his advisor when I cam to them with the problem and let them know the forum suggested MT-90 and his "advisor" said it wasn't recommended. I base my mods and upgrades on others feedback that has already done it. Although it does make sense that in the winter the redline would be really thick....I have the tsb done and had redline put in on Saturday....just like butter

Just to reiterate on this again. It was 24 degrees this morning according to my car when I left for work. I started the car, let it warm up to ~80* engine temp and took off. I had no issues shifting into any gear.

damn, well I dropped my car off at the dealer yesterday, they are doing some driving with a GM engineer today, he called me about twenty mins ago and asked if it was always really hard to get into second right after a cold night. mind you my trans was real rough before I put in redline so I'm not contributing it getting worse because of that, I just want my car to drive normal with no problems haha. they gave me a cruze ltz for a rental, and I might like it better than the sonic haha
Update: service manager called me today, they replicated the grind enough times to not call it driver fault. they ran my vin to check if there are an abnormally high amount of claims against trans problems, turns out there were none, checked ID on the trans they replaced and that one came back fine as well. they are stumped and so am I:sadbanana: I told them I wanted a 2013 LT replacement after beating the **** out of my car all day, lets see how that one goes over with GM...

just an update, Got everything squared away and trans seemed to be fine. I didn't like that my car has been taken apart so many times and I just had a bad vibe about it, so I traded it in for a 2013 ltz

New update for everyone, they replaced my second transmission with a third transmission. They also finally adjusted the shifter like I asked them two transmissions ago. So far no grinds, hopefully third time is the charm and I'm done with swapping transmissions cuz this is getting old quick.

They put a new trans in it, replaced the clutch as well. I drove it for a week or so but just didn't like the fact it's been apart so many times. It may have just been all in my head but the car didn't feel the same. The grinding did not happen again though, GM and the dealership gave me a really good deal to get into a new one.
