Got the idea from Laborsmith. About as wide as you can go. Maybe 1/4" inner clearance to strut just guessing. At least for a 17.5 wheel with 5.83" bs

I went with 17s for two reasons, the first because I knew the 7.5 width would work based on past experience, but the 18s could also work, but 8 inch width may be a problem. Second, weight as the 18 inch wheel usually carries more weight when added to the weight of the tire needed, in other words diminishing returns.
But remember the PCD limits choices in the 17s, so you may not have any 18 inch choice other than GM OEM wheels made for the Cruze.
Those were my reasons, others may have different reasons. Incidentally, the reason I use Discount is sometimes wheels (as well as tires) that look ok when one tries to put them on the car may not be ok.

I chose the 17's because that was as big as I could go without a rubber band around it. I didnt want too harsh of a ride, or have the speedo too far off. And Laborsmith already had the same size, but I couldnt find the bs on the dr-33's. But his and mine were both et40, so I figured they would fit. I knew the wheel would fit, but not the 225/45, so that was a gamble that worked out.
After fitting them, I was thinking along the lines you are Danny5. Just a rough guess till I can get actual measurements. Clearance to strut is around 1/2" and maybe a full inch to lip. With my tires though, its more like 1/4" to strut. I'll try my best to get legit measurements after work tonight.

The rear feels light because of the soft spring rate.
I believe the tire comes exactly to the fender lip, but not past it, in other words it would be California legal. But another quarter inch could very well earn a citation.

That must be the setup you are running. I am not flush with the lip. Would love it if they were. I wouldnt want it past, just as close as possible while being able to tuck under load. And it is legal to run your tire past the fender here. But it cant go further than the outer most sipe. And you have to run flaps for anything beyond that. Where I am located they arent sticklers about it.

One thing I have learned buying aftermarket wheels/tires: things that on paper are the same in real life may not be. My example: I bought 225/45 17s for a Beretta years ago. They went on but rubbed, although the tire dealers "book" said they would work. Had to go to 215/45, which is what, just over a half inch? and that worked perfectly.
That is why I say it is important to deal with a patient tire shop manager.
Oh, and wheels that on paper look the same may mount but have similar variances. I have experienced that in wheels as welll as tires.

I fear I'm being a technical pest here, but as a successful FWD race car builder and driver, I have to correct you. Under the conditions that the car was being driven -- steady state, high speed, high load cornering -- the car was exhibiting that the rear spring and/or roll bar (or anti-roll bar, to be truly accurate) rates were proportionately higher than those at the front, not softer. The higher rate at the rear results in the rear tires loosing grip before the front tires loose grip (again .. under those specific driving conditions). Wingman was in a nicely balanced FWD performance driving condition.
The Corvette suspension tuners introduced these roll rates to produce a "toss-able" chassis that, based on confirmation from several test track reviews, results in a rotating rear end under drop throttle and trail braking conditions. The rear of Wingman's car would have started a mild slide if he had abruptly lifted the throttle while under those cornering conditions. Then the GM Nanny would have introduced herself to the situation.
