Steering Noise

I had the car in today again to finally have my sway bar link replaced, turns out getting orders for parts on a Sonic takes forever so they wound up cannibalizing it from another one they had on the lot.

Noise is gone now and the service record stated: "3025 BALL SOCKET WORN OUT"

I'm hoping this isn't a recurring issue.

I know we're talking about a different noise but I have a rubbing noise in the steering wheel when turning all the way. Seems to be more evident when the car is warm. Anyone have this issue looked at?

So glad i found this thread.

For the last 1-2 weeks, when i slow down to pull into a parking spot, or back into one, and i turn the wheel a bit tighter than a normal turn, it makes this awful almost... growling sound. I tried to call my dealer, and of course because its the end of the month, they are booked for like 2 weeks straight.

Seems like other people are having similar problems. Ive never had a new car with a warranty before, so if they find something, do they have to fix it for free?

I've taken my wheel of twice now after hearing the noise and it stops doing it when I try to listen lol I'm going to live with it until it starts reoccurring more often.

Any updates on these creaking service issues with the steering? I'm taking in my car on Thursday and if there are any service bulletins I can point to it would be helpful because I can't recreate mine at the dealer. It only happens after long drives at particular turning radiuses.

SonicPA, if it is covered under the warranty, then there is no charge for fix. If the fix needs the car to stay over night, there is a Courtesy Car, also at no charge.

By my thinking, a warranty fix or repair is not free, as I paid for that service as part of the price of the car.

I have not heard the described sound.

Mine started with a one time clunk after driving off from being parked. It's now started creaking too, but only in the afternoon when it's hot. I listened this morning and it was fine.

90F out today and the car sounds like it's falling apart!

The mileage on my Sonic at replacement is 23K. Noise started at around 15K.
Besides the "creaking" sound, mine was making a heck of a lot of rattling racket on real hot days.

Was the new sway bar upgraded in anyway? Or do we just have the sway bar changed out like we change our oil??!! Was any reason given for the premature failure?

Howdy everyone!!!! Believe it or not my issue has been corrected.....I'm praying. Both front links were worn at the lower mount. Stud also loose in links. I had both front links replaced and so far all is good. No more clanking. Now as far as the steering noise goes, GM advised the dealer to order strut mounts and replace both front mounts. No noise has been heard as of today. 2 days and going strong. Part number (095022484) strut mounts and Links (95941670). Seems my car is being rebuilt little by little. opcorn:

That's exactly what I had.....dealer stated the noise was from a rubber mount rubbing against another rubber part. In all honesty that's what mine sounded like. Loud rubber schreeching.

I want you to know my dealer told me I didn't have a sway bar on my car! Now I know I'm female yet that doesnt' mean I don't know my own car.......HILARIOUS!!!!!!!:banana:

Just found out the reason mine was making the clunking sound had something to do with the steering shaft. The mechanic told me there is a bulletin out stating that it needs to be greased.

Maybe call your dealer and have them check the bulletin.

Thanks for posting this! I mentioned this to the dealer and thanks to you they were able to find the bulletin! Since I'm female, the service department doesn't take me seriously. Until I take a screen shot from this forum....then they listen.

anyways, lol

i have this noise in my steering column, kind of sounds like grinding or scraping noise while not moving but turning the wheel back and forth(don't do this on your blacktop driveway)

when i first noticed this, the dealer heard this and first thing went out to a sonic on the lot and checked it, mine was slightly louder.

dealer called for help to GM.they told my dealer to take tie rod ends off and turn the wheel to eliminate anything past the steering rack, noise was still there but evidently not loud enough to make anyone care yet, but a bulletin was made on it since i was the first person to have any problem like this.

i have also taken this to the next level with GM's customer care to follow up on it, and i will also be mentioning this post to them.

My wife's car started making a growling sound about 500 miles ago. It is at 7200 miles right now. The sound only seems to occur at slow speeds or while stopped and is not consistent. It comes and goes. I have not been able to pinpoint if it is after some miles driven or at a certain temperature range, but it is loud and annoying. It certainly sounds like a steering rack issue to me as there is no reason for the sway bar to be moving while the car is sitting still. I'd take it to my dealer, but I am absolutely fed up with the lack of quality control in the service department. They can't seem to get anything done correctly on this car....
