MyLink Siri Update for 2013 Cars

First, let me say thanks for the wonderful forum & thread. I've been looking everywhere for information on MyLink, and this place delivered!

I recently purchased a 2013 Chevy Equinox, and was bummed when I heard that the 2014 Chevy models were being updated with Siri Eyes Free (Sonic owners have had this feature for a while, and I was told that Equinox's were getting it too):

I purchased the 2013 model because I was told the 13/14 Equinox were exactly the same, and there were no added benefits for the 2014 Equinox. I am constantly driving for work, and the hands-free functionality of Siri would be highly beneficial for me. Given your extensive knowledge on the MyLink systems and updates Sonic owners have had in the past, what do you guys think about the following:

-Do you think Chevy will also release an update for the 2013 model year cars with MyLink?
-Is the hardware the same in the 2013 & 2014 MyLink models?
-Are the systems across different car models (Camero, Sonic, Equinox, etc) the same, or do they have different software?
-Does Siri Eyes Free require any extra hardware, or is it just a software update?
-If they don't release it for the 2013 cars and it is compatible, do you think there will be a way to obtain the 2014 file and do a self-update on my 2013?

As others have said, the MyLink support has not been very helpful on this issue. They don't know anything about software version #'s or updates, simply, check with your local dealer.

I'm not trying to be a smartass, but the MyLink unit in the Sonic and Spark is completely different from that in any other GM vehicle. You might want to ask at an Equinox forum.

I understand, the reason I asked it here was it was one of the few forums online that had detailed information about the MyLink system. I figured that some users who had experience updating their Sonic/Spark systems might have some knowledge GM's systems on other models. Crossing my fingers I can somehow update my 13 model!

Although may not help but might, the camaro.com site has much more info on MyLink and there is a chance the Camaro MyLink may be the same; the Sonic MyLink is most definitely not.

There is ALWAYS something different from one model year to the next. Always. Dealers are taught to sell what is at hand, which is why some dealers resist retail sold orders and if your dealer (no if about it) had a previous model year at hand and the new model year unit a hope, he has been trained to sell what he has. That could be one reason why buying a new car can be a scary experience: it is not that dealers lie but more that dealers can not tell the truth.

Chevy resists condoning the upgrade you desire as it would rather sell you another vehicle that has the upgrade. Example: the Sonic RS steering is an algorithm that can be put on non-RS Sonics with a less than ten minute computer flash but try and find a dealer who will do it!

Good luck and please update if successful. I have no problem being proven wrong.

I would say that out of all the cars in the GM lineup, your Equinox has a system most similar to the Cruze (if not the same!) and I am 99.9% sure that both units are built by Matsu****a in comparison to the LG units in the Spark/Sonic/Opel Adam which can be easily distinguished through the availability of BringGo in those vehicles.

From what's been said at these forums, updating the software, at least with our LG units, is more than a simple USB flash and involves messing with fuses and such.

My best advice to you would be to contact your dealer, explain your situation and see if you could get a firmware update to the 2014, which wouldn't be the easiest task in the world, and would involve cross-checking of part numbers that the 2013 and 2014 are the same hardware-wise, and perhaps a small charge and signing off on liability or warranty coverage on your unit in case something goes wrong.

If that doesn't work, call the GM Infotainment number 855-478-7767 and explain your case, though they'll probably give you boilerplate about why it can't be done but if your hardware numbers match for the 2013 and 2014 versions of the unit and you're adamant with them, there might be a way. I know folks here have received upgrades for the MyLink unit intended for Sonics in other countries by accident, haha so it just might be possible.

I buy this Mylink System from my friend but he doesnt work on my Sonic.

Have you tried swapping the ChevyStar (South America's version of OnStar) computer behind the glovebox with the one from your friend's car if possible? While I cannot guarantee that would solve your problems, it's the only realistic solution you have to get it to work without having to take your car to the dealer and explaining your situation.

Anyone try the AA-GM44 with mylink in a Sonic yet? PAC doesn't list it as an option but looking around online I see other people have used it with the non Spark/Sonic mylink units.

I'm using one of these with my MyLink. I spliced into the speaker wires to run an amp back out without touching any of the wiring in the car, it was quite simple and straight forward to do.

I have 2 pair of RCA running to the back of the car to a 5 channel amp and a 10" low profile sub in a custom box I built under my false floor.

For power, I just dropped a 16gauge wire from the power outlet to the 12v line for the remote for the amp. Also pretty straight forward.

Thanks, I didn't want to buy it just to find out the wiring had changed from 2012 to 2013.

Any noise issues? I've done tons of full system installs but never bothered with trying to retain the factory head unit before. This is the first one I feel is worth saving

Replaced my old LG Viper with a new Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. The connectivity problem seems to have gone away, but, like the old phone, apps that are on the phone either show as Not Installed (Stitcher and TuneIn) or execute but don't function (Pandora).

ok, just curious here, tried reading all the posts but waaaaayyyyyy too many pages, lol. I have a 2012 sonic, and wanted to see if it is possible to have the mylink installed.

Based on costs to upgrade say a Camaro head unit to MyLink I would guess it will never be done due to the dollars involved. $2000 for parts for a Sonic would make the upgrade uneconomic (might as well trade in for a MyLink equipped Sonic) but the same charge for a $40,000 Camaro makes the upgrade an easier swallow.

I would be willing to exchange the OnStar computer and MyLink headunit plus money for another Sonic owner's CD/USB headunit and OnStar computer if this was possible. The real issue is that the MyLink unit/OnStar computer is tied to the VIN on the vehicle and while it might be theoretically possible for a friendly dealer to reprogram it to work, it has never been attempted before.

My link quit working after a Nintendo ds was hooked up to the USB port for charging. All I get is the homepage with the chevy emblem. Camera works for reverse but does have the distance markers.
