Turbo "Kit" questions

That market is one of a kind. How many Civic kits are there, versus say Corolla? Why? Results? Demand? Gains vs. cost?

There is a very small slice of the sonic market looking for high-quality and expensive parts, and it's a small market in general.

On Z forums, these guys think if you haven't spent $3k on exhaust (no headers) then you bought cheap stuff. And it doesn't even gain power. But a larger majority of the owners of those cars are enthusiast compared to commuters, so the market supports it. 10k+ turbo kits are considered normal, on a 30K car. Most owners have them as a play car though.

I'm in the same boat, it's going to run me 1,000-1,500 for a cat back (2,500+ for a full titanium set up), 600-1,000 for a down pipe and that's not even touching pre turbo exhaust parts. Until I throw a Stage II tune and down pipe on the STi the cat back is just an expensive noise maker. Luckily I'm happy with the performance gain of the STi over my tuned Sierra and Sonic... For now.

That's just for parts alone which is out of the above average Sonic modifier much less the guys on here asking for a 1,500 dollar kit. Put in Morgan's R&D and additional materials and you're pushing the cost well out of even the touch of owners on here pushing their cars to the limits.

The purpose of the post was to start a conversation. I do not think any of you guys are wrong for wanting a $1,500 turbo kit. If I could figure out how to do that and make money, I'd be all over it.

The only way I could see this working is if you made a kit that was full of options. Make a log manifold and a tubular, make the dp mate up in the same spot for either have optional flanges for the diff types of turbos. And then sell them in pieces or as a whole. Offer a turbo but don't limit them to having to get one through you. Make incentives for getting the whole kit from you .... Like small price cuts.
Zzp has been doing like this for a ling time. They have made it work because the cheap people can spend a little and get a good product and the money bags can spend the right amount and get a killer kit.

But that's just my 2 cents worth

Unfortunately, there is no way that I could afford to drop 3-5k on upgrading my turbo system. In addition, after installing that kit, I would probably need to upgrade my transmission, adding another several thousand dollars to the project. I'll stick with my current snail and all the bolt-ons it can stand.

My guess at price did not include R&D. If R&D was factored in you would find far fewer limited market products out there. The $700 for the header is based off of a quote for a one off header and then reduced a bit. Once a jig is made the cost for each additional part is lower.

For comparison I pieced together a kit using a log manifold for my Z24 for under $1500. This included a new turbo, wastegate, BOV, IC and couplers, and oil lines. I had to make my own DP and IC piping, but with a chop saw and welder that is not all too hard to do.

Having spent the time and money of my own to bring a part to market so to speak, I know that if you try to recoupe R&D it will either take a long time to sell the parts or you will recoupe a small amount per part averaged over a lot of parts.

So you should be able to install a turbo on your 1.8 for less than 2,000 easy. Let us know how that works out for you, I'm sure plenty of 1.8 guys would buy your kit.

What I came up with for my 1.8


Header (one off) $900
WG and BOV $500
Lines $200
Turbo $900
IC and piping $500

So $3000 for what I want. I could go cheaper on some things but I know what parts I want. I could save about $600 just by using a log style, but that is not what I want. For what I want though I will have additional costs involved due to a full engine build to make it a reliable turbo set up. The goal is for about 250 at the wheels and remain reliable.

Has anyone found the limits of the stock 1.4 IC yet?

I'm sure pricing would be in the area of the HEP Cruze Turbo kit which is $3899. But that comes with a turbo back exhaust which I do not need with the exception of a new downpipe most likely. I've been tempted to buy that kit actually, but $3899 is a lot of money especially for something not tested..

If u can offer the kit with options like someone mentioned before, and have it connect to some factory location stuff like for aftermarket intakes to work or down pipes to bolt up to a 3" band at same location would allow a much cheaper kit that can be offered in stages and still high quality yet affordable. If that's even possible lol

I'd prefer a tubular manifold, but if you think the log manifold could get to 250whp/250wtq with something like a gt2256 for around $1500-$2000 or less, then that's what I'd be most interested in. Those turbos are available for around $700, which would leave quite a bit for the manifold.

Any more power than that and you're going to need serious internal mods. Even at that level, you'll probably need a LSD and good tires to put the power down.

If anyone has actually taken the time to look at MPfab's work, I don't see how you can expect that this system is going to be in the $1500-$2000 range. It's absurd. I have my doubts that a MPfab turbo kit would attract enough buyers to recoup R&D.

On a somewhat related note, the turbo kit for the Yamaha WR250 costs $2 grand and is so sexy that I want to buy a bike just so I can slap the kit on it.
