The point of this project for me is to actually build the engine and put in a car. Not modify an existing engine.

Its something I've been wanting to do and even if it takes a while I'm okay with it. I just want to actually do it by hand and have something I made myself.

I understand this. Either way if it's a race car go aluminum, it's plenty strong and much lighter. That being said you could build an ls block from scratch with a carb like you want. They are super sturdy blocks. Start with an ls1 and bore it to whatever you please throw in some forged Pistons, crank and rods
and a nice set of aftermarket heads, u will be crazy fast and you can still shoot it with nitrous.

LS1 is "old" and, for some reason, people still think they are the sh!t. Cathedral port heads don't flow that great compared to the current port designs and "truck" engines are pretty easy to come by at a good price.

LQ4 engines are iron-blocked with dished pistons for a CR of 9.4:1, have 6 bolt mains and are usually $1000 for a decent long block.

GM performance makes some crazy cheap heads:
LS3 CNC Ported
These are cheaper than most SBC performance heads

Add an "ASA" spec cam and you're about 500hp for under $3K - which can safely take moderate boost, should you choose to add it in the future. I want to say that our GMPP guy told me the stock internals are safe up to 700 hp. STOCK!

Depends on what u consider old. It came out in the mid-late 90s and is much newer than the car he's putting it in. They are much cheaper than an ls2 (which came out only 5 years later I think) they are both 6 bolt mains and the ls is much lighter than the lq. Sure stock internals are stronger on the lq but that hardly matters because he's planning on rebuild it himself for fun/experience.

You can't go wrong either way but why put a cast iron block in a race car? There are lots of people pulling 500 with much less weight.

If this was a truck for off road use if have a different opinion on the subject.

It's a "race car". Mostly its just something i want to build and am not looking to really set records so weight isnt a huge concern. I just want something much faster than it appears/has any reason to be. But i have a good idea of where im going. Thanks for the help.
