Who uses the arm rest?

I've been leaving my right hand on the shift knob for 30 years. When can I expect this bad practice to affect me?

for me it caused the shifter linkage bushing it wear prematurely … thought it took many yrs to become a problem

I've had 4 cars with MTs over the past 30 years and I've never had that happen. What the heck are you doing to the shift knob when you're not shifting??

I hate it and think it's painful to use. It's too Narrow.

I was thinking about making the existing armrest wider by making a padded attachment I could just put over the existing one that I could somehow clamp on. But I gave up on the idea.

I am a lefty and I just find it wicked comfortable having my left hand on the steering wheel and my right hand resting on the shift.

I am still debating on getting one of the Aveo Consoles, but hate to give up the drink holder access.

I think if I had an automatic it would be down all the time. Having a manual trans its in the way during most of my driving. Should I take a long trip and on a highway I would use it.

You only lose one cup holder and eventually forget it was ever there.

Let's see...arm comfort all the time vs. using an extra cup holder once in a great while. Yeah, I'll take the arm comfort ANY day.

I can't shift with it down. I keep it up and out of the way.

I use mine in my 1.4 man. trans hatch all the time; after modifying the down stop to elevate the front nose of the armrest about 1.5 inches. I do raise the arm rest to more easily fasten the seat belt. I have no problems with using the cup holders or the shifter while using the arm rest.

I always use mine. However, I would prefer a nice console armrest like I have in my other cars.

Since my last post, I had a long road trip and I realized that I was uncomfortable to not use the armrest. So, I decided that I'll use it for long trips, but not for short local drives. My elbow rests just about on the tip end of the armrest and that seems OK.

In my 6mt I keep it up but in my wife's automatic I keep it down

relatively poor design, and extremely hard material … I use it, but wish it were more comfortable … a bigger problem is the hardness of the door arm rest … VERY uncomfortable … and even a bigger problem is the narrowness of the window ledge … can't rest my elbow on it (with the window up)

I'll second that vote for a more comfortable door arm rest. A little padding would be much appreciated!

I bought a cheapo mouse pad from Walmart, cut it to fit the door armrest and used double sided mounting tape to stick it into place. That should make things more comfortable from now on. It's just enough to give the armrest a little cushion.
