ZZP Sonic Intake

The ZZP intake is installed and running. It appears to me shorter than I expected but per the dyno chart and my driving experience is very effective, especially at freeway speeds where passing in sixth gear was done without any engine hesitation. Just before I got on I-96 I filled up, and the third bar disappeared as I was going through 135 on the trip odometer, by far better than any other time I was checking for highway mileage. I was not expecting a mpg improvement therefore I did not reset the DIC but that appears to me 50mpg on the highway. That may not sound like a big improvement but on four previous occasions, three times I was just over 40mpg and once 45mpg.

I have given permission for the dyno charts to be posted. I do not know how to myself.

The materials are on hand but ZZP was still making adjustments when I left for Tuesday night at 5pm, and had run several test dynos before they got their base line (I think they wanted a stock-ZZP Intake that did not throw CELs. They got their baseline dyno around 5pm and the last dyno shortly after 7pm. And then the next morning they were able to do do the road tests. Now that ZZP knows what will work I suspect it is a matter of assembly. What struck me is how short the intake is compared to how effective it works.

When the dyno charts come out, there is a stock tune, stock intake; stock tune, ZZP intake; Trifecta tune, stock intake; and, Trifecta tune, ZZP intake.

All runs had the cat back hi flow exhaust. The combination of exhaust, intake and tune gave some produced amazing numbers: stock/stock 152hp/161t to ZZP/tune 172hp/222t. The stock/stock is not true stock due to the DDMWorks exhaust. Stock tune/ZZP increased hp by 15hp.

The trifecta tune was the unmodified original so I expect the numbers could be changed if someone were to put it all together and get a data logged based tune.

Some time ago someone opined on this forum that the Sonic could not be turned into a sports car. I believe we now have proof that contradicts that opinion, depending, of course, on how one defines a sports car. If one is willing to accept that Ferrari has a long history of making and marketing sports cars as well as race cars, then we should remember the original 1954 Ferrari 750 Monza was a four cylinder two seater. Of course the Sonic has a back seat and the Monza did not. Still . . . .

The heat extractors are on the other side. I was more concerned about the alternator when I first got the hood, so I do not see water getting into the intake. We will know pretty soon as a major downpour is heading this way.

1.4 only? I suspect 1.4 only but I think one would have to ask ZZP directly.

I did not see very many naturally aspirated vehicles while there and their courtesy car is a supercharged HHR SS, if that says anything about the orientation of their thinking.

Thanks for posting this update. I've been waiting for it to come in for almost two months now. The numbers that you listed, are they corrected flywheel numbers or at the wheels? I'd like to see the gains you got from tuned stock airbox to tuned ZZP. Does the HP drop/dip after 5k RPM? Lots of questions, but seeing your post got me more excited for the intake to come in. Thanks

Several questions to be answered. These are at the wheel numbers and as far as I know are not adjusted. The ZZP dyno uses mph instead of rpm, which is the same way my local dyno does. I believe most use rpm but White's here in Warren and ZZP in Wyoming, MI use mph and those are the only two I have ever used.

Adding the ZZP intake to the tuned car compared to stock intake/tuned shows they track together close to 64-5 mph then the ZZP line starts showing more power (hp and tq) all the way to 90+ mph. There is no drop at that point but afr lean is probably why they stopped. Since the car won't be driven at those speeds until re-tuned it works for me. Past 64, ZZP has 6hp/4tq more than stock. May not seem like much but at freeway speeds you really notice the difference.

I do not know but suspect these pulls were done in 4th gear.

Thank you, Wingman, for the kind words. When I got the Sonic I was not sure how much I would do (I knew the rims/tires would go away and the extractor hood would go on, but uncertain about the rest, such as the exhaust) but must say it has been great fun.

Doesnt seem that way.... It says "engine speed" at the bottom. And where are the "tuned" runs?
