Took my downpipe off today to inspect the turbo as I had a boost code pop up the other day. 54k miles and the turbo is cracked at the wastegate port. Bone stock, never had any modifications done.
Did you also check the wastegate for any play? Again, GM says that a hairline crack is normal but if the crack is significant or if the wastegate does not move freely or close flush then it def should be replaced.Took my downpipe off today to inspect the turbo as I had a boost code pop up the other day. 54k miles and the turbo is cracked at the wastegate port. I hope you can get it fixed cheap.
Yet another thing I will be worrying about. I was always weary of getting a turbo car.

I should add that from your picture it looks like the wastegate is not closing all the way. Are you underdelivering boost at all?

Your sounds like it's starting to fail just like mine did. The code going off was hit or miss 3-4 time in a month span, stayed in last time for about 4-5 days then went to history. Finally was replaced once I got the code back that same day of the appointment.
If you can determine what can trigger it.. like my case was accelerating from the on ramp to the highway.

I wish the Chevy dealer I am going to now would have let me see the old turbo so I could see the level of damage/coking/build up in it but there policy wouldn't let me.

Thx Blue, that is a good enough confirmation for me right now.
Ya, i plan probly next spring to pull the IC and piping out and see how bad it might be inside of it and clean it if possible... or replace with MPFabs
This is not good news for me. My sister bought a 2013 turbo. I was going to buy a 2014 1.8, but some things came up that changed my plans. Now I am inheriting my sisters 1.4 turbo with 60,000 miles on it. She has never been one to properly maintain a car. She claims she has never had any problems with it, but I have always avoided turbocharged cars because of how complicated they are. I was looking for a transportation car. I drag race a supercharged V8 powered Chevy S10, but that's definitely not good for transportation. You can expect to work on a race car. I will definitely not be racing the Sonic.
Good luck ToadzScheduled an appointment for the dealer to check out the turbo next week. Hopefully they take care of it and quickly.
Well, disappointed with the dealership. Aside from being given a filthy older model Malibu for a rental, they claim that the crack is a normal casting seam and the turbo is operating properly, even though the car is down on power. I'm not even sure if they actually looked at the inside of the turbo because it's painfully obvious that there is a large crack in the turbo and the wastegate does not shut.
My family and I have owned Chevy's and GMC's all my life but honestly this may be the last.
