Second gear grinding & remedy

so i just got the call from chevy and they said i should not be driving my car like that hahaha. i am not driving it hard i just want it fixed. so i guess ill be getting a stronger thicker transmission fluid

My service dept called me and gave me the same thing..the mechanic who was with me was like this car was not meant to be driven this way...I said if I have to pull out on a country road and accelerate fast I expect my tranny to shift properly...they said its noted on my file and if anything happens to the tranny there is a history...go figs

^^^ agreed. In my mind that logic would equal this car= 50hp, just enough to get up to the posted legal limit. A 3speed trans without syncros (for take off, town and highway). No safety features (because you shouldn't crash), and no amenities (because its only transportation).

I had my trans replaced under warranty, had the shifter cables adjusted and put in redline MT90 and it still has grind from 1st to 2nd once, i've just learned to live with the fact I'm not supposed to bang it in gear. If i have to rip on it in first, i'll push the clutch in and ease it into 2nd. worked sofar even though thats not the way it should be. the redline did make it feel like a new trans though, shifts like smooth butter! its worth the 40 bucks. I see how GM is coming back saying the car isn't supposed to be ripped on, its a 1.4 eco car, not a cobalt ss or evo.

What kind of car it is doesn't really matter. When operated correctly and shifted before the set redline it shouldn't grind going into any gear at any rate of quickness.

This. How mechanics at dealerships can't grasp this concept is beyond me.

^^^ DEFLECTION ^^^ its an easy way to get the cutomer off their back. Either because they don't want to fix it, are A-holes, don't know how to fix, or their isn't a current fix available (although that awnser should work on its own), or they're really that dumb.

Its a bunch of bolloks!! Ima going to put in some redline this weekend and see what happens

So here's the explanation I got from the service advisor on how they assess the cars, it makes sense too. So: They drive it, recreate said issue (or not), plug it to the computer and look for error codes. No error codes it is deemed completely normal. Which makes sense to me since the first 6 times I took mine in they told me just that. All normal. Then when they recreated it and hooked it up and no codes, so no fix. Then GM tech support stepped in and told them what to fix. Which in fact didn't fix it at all. I got so upset because I was thinking they still used good ole fashioned mechanics. Take the shtuff apart till you fix it. But what I was told is that is what they are limited too. I half believe that, I think they could take some things apart if they wanted to but they don't so that's their fallback which is within GM quality apparently. Not just trying to bad mouth GM I promise. If that is GM's requirements only, I strongly suggest with these new models coming out and such, revise your requirements to after so many visits, then take the time to tear it apart and fix it. Sorry again for the rant, it's not been such a good day between my sonic and I. We're still fighting! Ugh. Luck to ya

Hmae37 that is what is in common practice today. Although it is not and should not be true..

There are countless problems that will not show a code and/or will become much worse before throwing a code..

Not sure how many sensors our trans has but I would bet on no more than two. Both would be speed sensors (output and possibly an input). THE ONLY THING I could see the computer being able to detect a slipping clutch (because of a variance between engine RPM and trans input speed). I don't see how any tech could actually think a manual trans will throw a code for a problem. Its non sensical if one actually has a fair bit of knowledge on cars.

As a former tch I understand why they don't want to do exploratory surgery on a trans. 1. Its not gonna pay well. 2. They likely have to get approved by GM to locate our problem, otherwise they aren't gonna get compensated and the dealer will eat the bill and probably not find the problem. 3.they don't want to risk their reputation hunting something they probably can't fix (would need engineering change). 4. Don't want to leave the cutomer without a car while they go "needle hunting". My dealer said they would have to pull the trans out to diag the problem, I don't want that bc well its gonna be explored and there are a lot of steps that can be overlooked during disassembly/assembly and then I've got more issues then I started with and I'm not guarenteed a fix..


I'm gonna go out on a limp and say its either going to require some one willing to donate their car to GM for awhile so the specialist trouble shooters and engineers can get a look at it. Or GM to be put into enough pressure to actively go after this issue on their own accord.. I'm fairly certain if they actually fix the problem it will be in the form of a revised transmission.

I agree and see the cost difference there. However, it makes no sense for them to risk their reputation on not being competent enough to use basic mechanics to diagnose a problem to which has been presented to them a multitude of times, thus ruining not only the dealer reputation for saving a bit of money but also making a large dent in the reputation of GM for the dealer being a trusted service center on behalf of GM. While I agree to cut some costs on some things and not do as much when it's so obviously a computer malfunction needing it techs not mechanics, but cutting cost when some issues so obviously point to mechanics (even maybe a comp mechanic combination). That's why I think the process should be amended to include if multiple service requests done for same issue on same vehicle it should then be a combination of GM techs (not from a distance) and the dealer mechanics tearing crap apart. Actually working together in person and finding, figuring out the details and fixing may cost less in labor and and parts and such then to swap them out. Also if it were something to that recreates itself in different areas of the countries and in only say a dozen handfuls of peoples cars (not enough to notice a pattern), those funds spent paying the mechanic and tech to dig in together on one may save some major bucks in full replacement costs compared to a bulletin and dealers fixing the other consumer's vehicles based in the findings in the one that was thoroughly picked apart. Just my thought on it since I've been dealing with this so long and it's progressively getting worse, still.... And I apologize as well for my long posts. I like to be detailed as much as I can so not to leave out something that may be imperative to a situation. Nothing sucks worse then to read or work on something then get that one small piece of info that stops ya dead in your tracks and you think "why the eff didn't you tell me that before?" LOL

Guess I jinxed myself guys, today under normal driving the trans grind into second like hell, stopped by the dealership and told them, they are opening a case with GM to find out what the problem is. I told them it was totally unacceptable for it to be happening in more that one trans (already had it replaced once) we've looked at everything, cables are in spec, trans has redline in it, clutch and slave have been checked for proper working order. i'm starting to think GM screwed up and produced a junk trans. the dealer is more than understanding and they said they'd do all they can in order to make it right. I'll update if i find anything.
