Don't like the way the DB9 feels in the hand. I'm not a big guy and have smaller sized hands. I didnt say I had a problem shooting the 10mm.

I may look for a full size 9 or .45 soon though. Something I could possibly take to an amature shoot and do well with. I have been having a hard time with the sights on the smaller handguns and tend to string the group up and down a bit.

10mm is to pricey buying from the store and I'd recommend against it if you only buy ammo. If you reload it's a blast and is as cheap to shoot as any other round.

Girlfriend just picked up the M&P 22 for some plinking fun. Seems to be the same size as the MP9. Hitting the range on Sunday for a while.

I have a Kel-Tec PF-9 (basically the same as a LC9, LCP is a .380) and its not that bad to shoot. 50 rounds in one sitting is about my limit though. DB380 is a blast to shoot, M&P9c is amazingly comfortable, G32 has a loud bark but very manageable to shoot. The G32 is actually kinda fun to shoot at the range when new people are around.

The M&P 22 has gotten pretty good reviews. My Sig Mosquito has to run CCI Mini-mags or it has FTF's and FTE's. It was kind of fun to shot it like that though, it let me practice cleaning a bad round.

M&P22 feels just like a full size M&P with the exception that they do not have the interchangeable grip. Dont run cheap stuff through it. Mine loves the CCI stinger, but hates the Remington Golden Bullet. Seems as though higher velocity .22LR is what the gun prefers. That being said, its a rimfire and occasional fail to fire will happen. Usually if mine doesnt fire I put the round back in and try it a second time. Also, CCI stinger fresh from the chamber going down the back of your shirt is NOT fun. Those little bastards get hot.

If you look in the picture i posted the middle column is top to bottom M&P22, M&P9c, and M&P40 Shield. Makes an okay comparrison of size between them.

Home defense or just target shooting? It really depends on what caliber is comfortable for you, what magazine/cylinder capacity you want, and if you intend to conceal it.

I prefer a pistol for both defense and target and will bounce between a SW686 4" .357, Glock 17 9mm, or Ruger LCP .380. SW for power, the Glock for capacity and the Streamlight attached, and the Ruger for concealment.

I'll also never pass up an opportunity to suggest an AR-15 in 5.56. Tons of fun and fairly cheap to shoot.

Home defense

Assuming by small you mean a pistol. I paid about 650 for my SW686 and picked up a used 45 for about the same.

I woudnt be comfortable with anything smaller than a 9mm for home defense. My G17 is 9mm but holds 17 rounds as opposed to the 45's 8 rounds and the .357's 6. Kind of a trade off of power for capacity.


The goods. I enjoy tuning them as much as shooting them.

No worries. They both shoot well. The Smith and Wesson was better out of the box. Very crisp trigger. The Glock is barely a glock now as I changed every removable part for aftermarket options. Blame that on my need to tinker.

Definitely find a gun store and just hold a bunch of guns. See what feels right in your hand. I own/owned pistols from Springfield, Glock, Ruger, Browning, S&W, Dan Wesson, and Taurus. All were fantastic weapons with the exception of one of my Taurus guns repeatedly failing to feed and eject with any ammo.



I just saw that your profile says you are from socal. What that means for you is no magazines larger than 10 rounds for any gun. and some manufacturers that sell in PA may not sell in CA for compliance reasons.

On long guns that also means no threaded barrels, adjustable stocks, pistol grips, bayonet lugs, etc.

For under 500 I'd recommend a Remington or mossberg shot gun with 18 inch barrel, you would have enough left to add pressure switch and weapon light and mabey a laser if you wanted one. If you want a pistol shop around for used ones, stick to glocks, sigs, S&W any of the big name brands. With a pistols make sure you practice your malfunction drills. If you just wanna go to range couple times a year to maintain your sight picture proficiency then I'd recommend a revolver with 4inch barrel. They will normally hold 7-8 rounds which will be equivalent to a semi in Cali.
