Um ok? I merely wanted a gear indicator as a luxury. I don't NEED it and frankly it's not a big deal. But hey you're clearly the stick master and my opinion is irrelevant.

Do you even drive stick? If you did you'd realize you get to the point where you subconsciously change gears. If I'm cruising in 5th gear for a minute my brain isn't constantly saying "you're in 5th gear". So yes sometimes in certain situations i have to double check.

I've "only" been driving stick for 17 years but i've obviously had more stick vehicles (10 bought, 7 bulit/restored) then you because most, if not all of them had gear indicators. How you've never owned a car with one is beyond me...

Decades is at least 20 years. You've only been driving for 17. So you knew from the start that you hadn't been driving a stick as long.

I currently own 2 vehicles with sticks. I've owned my '64 GTO convertible since 1992. The '72 Camaro was purchased in 2000. I've driven a number of 6 speed GTO's and Firebirds as well as a plethora of other manual transmission equipped cars and trucks.

I've owned 3 on the trees, 4 on the trees, 3, 4, 5 and 6 speeds on the floor. And if you include low range - I guess I've driven an 8 speed with 2 reverse gears.

Regardless of what you say, when you know what gear you're in based on your rpm and speed you ARE using math to calculate the gear. It may only take us 0.8 seconds to figure it out, but having a gear indicator takes no thinking at all. Also it's not a matter of "forgetting what gear I'm in" but the fact that most the time when I'm driving i shift subconsciously.

Please read your own words above - it appears that you have forgotten what gear you are in at times.

And no, I don't need to take .8 seconds to calculate what gear I'm in. I KNOW that 3,000 RPM in my GTO is 70 MPH. 60 MPH is just a tad over 2500.

That engineering degree doesn't mean you know anything about cars. I've worked with several engineers - some are car guys - some aren't. Heck, some of the engineers I've worked with are brilliant in their field of expertise, but wouldn't be able to find their way out of a closet with the light on and the door open.

Alright fellas, let's chill out and get back on topic. Some of us want changes and some don't. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I am personally for the camp the an RS model means something special. Not just cosmetics, but something competitive with Chevy's biggest rival, Ford. Because Chevy refuses to compete in the Hot Hatch market, I will be switching when the time comes.

However, I do respect those that appreciate the car for it's simpleness and economic background. It is designed to be a subcompact car, not a racer. I can get behind that and support you. All I ask is that you do the same for those of us that want a proper sporty version. You dont have to buy, just don't tell is how idiotic we are.

Anywho, I hope support for the car continues. I'm not happy with the new looks, but I understand.

Historically, the RS package was originally just a cosmetic package.

The 1967 Camaro RS package included a blacked out grill with hidden headlights, revised parking and tail lights, upgraded interior trim, and RS badging. The base engine was a 250 cubic inch inline 6 cylinder with a 1 barrel carb.

That follows through on the current Camaro. The RS package is available with any of the 3 engines and includes:

20" 5-split spoke premium Gray-painted
Machined-face aluminum wheels
High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps
LED taillamps
RS-specific grilles

Nothing but cosmetics.

What you are looking for is an SS package, which for the most part has been a performance package (save for the original 1964 Malibu SS which was available with a 6 banger.

Ford is a competitor - but they aren't really all that much. If it weren't for fleet sales (read that as highly discounted sales to rental car agencies, etc...) Ford would have had a serious drop in their sales last month.

Sales to fleet customers — such as rental car companies and government customers — represented 37% of Ford's sales in March, up from 29% a year ago, Ford sales analyst Erich Merkle said on a conference call.

That compared to 23% in March for GM, which has been aggressively cutting its reliance on fleet sales.

If your looking for performance credentials - Ford plays second fiddle to Chevy and GM also.

Manufacturer's Championships in NASCAR - Chevy has won the last 13 consecutive. Ford has won a grand total of 4 since 1970.

Prefer Indy car? Ford doesn't compete. Only Chevy and Honda.

If you like the FiST - go for it. I personally am not interested in that car, but there are a few buyers out there that are.

I'm personally holding out for the 50th Anniversary Camaro - it will be my wife's birthday present (the '72 Camaro is her car).

Convertible, 6.2 L V8 with the 6 speed tranny. Maybe even the RS cosmetic option...

I was just commenting on the auto show and how well each car was shown. Ford had STs for one to sit in and literature. Chevy one could look but not touch..no literature.
I'll get some pics to the thread. If I drove a stick the Fiesta ST was nice. If I wanted an auto the Fiesta ST did not come with one and I could never get their problematic DCT trans..doubt it could hold together ..they don't put it behind any stronger engines.

The Ford GT and Acura NSX were beautiful.

From what I've seen it's sub-thirty year olds who seem to bemoan the RS isn't a hot hatch. GET OVER IT. Go back to playing Forza and reading Jalopnik.

It's a great car for the money, nice features, drives nice and is upgradable if you want more. Stop telling people it should be an ST fighter, because it isn't (and was never intended to be).

Chevy isn't engaged in 4cyl FWD performance right now. They killed it all off for a reason, and judiciously. Perhaps in a few years when the next gen appears and the 4T Camaro has roots, but don't hold your breath

....if it has tits or tires it can be upgraded

GRC and Rally America have featured Sonics.

Pat Morrow drives the GRC car. Jean-Pierre Rasaiah (driver) and Matt Hoffman (co-driver) are running a Sonic in the B-Spec class of Rally America. Ray Piloto is also running a car in the west in a few rally series.

I also have a friend that is working on building a B-spec car for Rally America. It won't be ready until next year.

It's in most heats, but never qualifies well. Chevy doesn't seem to 100% support the team.

I actually have a personal friend of mine that has been running GRC for a number of years. Steve Arpin - driving for Chip Ganassi.

When I catch a GRC race on TV - I will watch it - but only because Steve is driving in it. Otherwise I wouldn't have any interest in this form of racing.

Steve has been racing all his life. As a young teenager - he won 3 World Championships for Polaris. He started driving a dirt track car at 14. In 2000 he won every single Wissota Modified feature race at his home track (Emo Speedway) and his second track championship in 3 years (he was 17).

I got to know Steve when he moved down from Canada to run the USMS Touring Series that ran frequently at the track that I've been affiliated with since 2005.

I enjoyed spending time in the pits with him for about 5 years before his talent was too much for our area.

He got rides in both ARCA and NASCAR. He drove for Dale Jr.'s team for a number of races (back when Danica Patrick only drive part time). He did better than Danica, but she had godaddy's milliions backing her.

He's making a decent living driving GRC and having a blast.

He was back for the wedding of a mutual friend last fall - was good to see him again!

One last thing on our absolutely rediculas gear indicator argument...

You try to make it sound like i want an indicator because I'm an amateur. And yet I've never seen a (stripped out) race car that doesn't have one. The fact that even 1 professional driver choses to have that information available proves my point.

You should be lecturing those professional drivers. So rediculas that someone would build a car with only the most essential equipment and to have a gear indicator... Those amateurs...

I didn't just watch Steve race from the stands, I was a track official at the local speedway. After the races were over many of us would hang out for an hour or two and do some serious bench racing in the pits.

We both lived about a mile outside of a town of about 1,000 people - so we ran into each other frequently.

After he moved up to ARCA and Nationwide, when his schedule would permit, he would made guest appearances back at our local speedway. Mrs. Champ and I would help Steve and his wife at his vendor trailer selling his hats/shirts/diecast cars.

Steve is great with kids and a great role model for them.

Miss having him here - but am happy that he's making a good living doing what he loves to do. And getting to travel the world on Chip Ganassi's dime...

You obviously haven't seen too many race cars.

I've literally seen thousands of race cars without one. I've never had a gear indicator in any race car I've driven either - automatic or stick.

Are you going to send me another personal message telling me I'm "just a grumpy old man that isn't happy with my own life"?

And then after that you tell me not to bother replying because you "don't give a **** what I have to say"...

Well obviously, you do care.
