It started acting up after winter.
It was low 50's this morning on my way to work though. I guess it kind of sounded louder, idk prolly not though. I'm just more easily annoyed before 6AM.

Hi, everyone. This is a really informative thread. One thing that wasn't entirely clear to me, though: is this a problem that is still affecting new Sonics? Or was it confined largely to the 2012s (and maybe 2013s)? In other words, is this something prospective new buyers should worry about?

Transmission whine
My transmission starting this awful whine last week. The only thing I can equate the sound to is the whine your power steering makes when it's going out & you're turning it. I've had 3 different people tell me it's the tranny over the weekend & one even had me driving it while it was on the lift. It starts about 25-30 mph & continues until I stop the car no matter what gear I'm in. Took it to the dealership this morning & got the whole "my techs have to be able to recreate the sound" & we should be able to diagnose the problem in a couple days.....
Not sure whether it would be covered under Chevy's power train or my extended warranty but what really sucks is that their lone transmission man is 3 weeks behind in work...... RAWR

Tranny will be covered under the 5 year 100K warranty if you're in the US.
Sounds like it's loaner time.

Had my transmission replaced (6-speed manual) last winter when my car was around 60K miles. It was whining like a bad wheel bearing does. Service manager told me it was the bearing and that GM didn't have a replacement part, so they'd just be giving me a new transmission. Gave me a 2014 Volt with less than 1500 miles on it for a loaner and got to test drive that for four days. I'm up to 85K now and this transmission seems to be holding up well. However, I still get the grind sometimes when I shift hard, which I was hoping to be eliminated by the replacement.
Thank goodness for the 100,000 mile warranty or else I would have been in trouble financially.

Whelp, it looks like I get to join this club now

If I go and get this replaced will it be replaced with a newer generation transmission, that presumably does not have this issue? I bought my sonic used with 27xxx miles on it, so I hope they honor the 100,000 mile power-train warranty (only about 37xxx on it now).

Looks like I have the transmission issues too. Hopefully I luck out and get a Volt for a few days! I would consider purchasing one of the new ones if my Sonic ever gets totaled.
I'm under the 100k miles, but at this pace, I'll need a new transmission at some point after the warranty expires. What's the sticker price for one of these replacements? I put about 30K miles a year on my Sonic and if I need a new transmission every 2.5-3 years, it may be time to switch.

Not sure what the price is, but I'm seriously considering selling mine when the warranty expires. I still owe 10K on it and I'm at 89,800 miles (brand new June 30, 2012). If I don't dump it off, hopefully I can pay it down far enough where it'll sell for more than I owe before I have another huge repair issue.

Well i found out today I'm getting a new transmission in my 2013 RS with 42k miles. I get the whining noise through all gears and that high pitch whine in 6th. Dealership was super cool with the whole thing which was great. The problem probably started around 30k and progressively got louder. Ive read every page of this article but maybe i missed it. With the new trans replacements, are the issues resolved. Where any changes made?

I've heard mine whine for the last 10K miles or more. Getting progressively louder. Wouldn't the timing chain warm up during longer commutes and the whine would dissipate if that was indeed the issue?
I'm dropping my Sonic off today. Hopefully they don't give me the run around and just hand me the keys to a loaner car and call me when it's replaced. Last thing I want to do is spend all day at the dealer and end up leaving in something more expensive...
