Cold Air Intake with stock airbox

what a great write up but will we end up with the same check engine light issue?

Hopefully not, but we will see. Some of the aftermarket intakes will throw a CEL, and require a tune. This is my third custom and the first two have been problem free.

Now I need a k&n drop in filter. I've asked ZZP if the cruze turbo k&n will fit and they said they dont know? So does anyone know of a k&n for the turbo Sonic?

There is no set procedure on this, and I really like that you used Home Depot parts through and through.

When I was searching for a screen to cover my opening, I found that plastic floor drain. I think that is an awesome idea, and the look is very factory.

How did you handle your anti-siphon? a 3/4" hole in the vertical piping would be all you need.

That is what I will be doing today when the wife gets back. I just can't decide whether or not to drill out the xx on the floor drain piece. Did you get an increase in sound with yours being 3"?

Ya know, I was wondering if I would. There is a definite increase in turbo whistle when I am in the garage, but once on the road, it really faces the wrong way for me to hear anything different.

I want a drop-in filter too at this point, maybe we should measure the stock paper one and find a replacement

I just had the airbox apart yesterday! Crap! I was considering cutting out some of the bottom to get more sound from it, but after looking at it, I quickly put it back together and convinced myself to not do anything too radical. I think I will take a measurement tonight after work. I will post in the early am.

So....now that I am off work, I am gonna try my best to find this damn filter. Thing is the k&n will more than likely have a different height than the factory filter, at least thats how it was on the legacy. I'll post up the ones I have tried.

Here is a few that are close to the measurements. I searched by dimension from 8-10" outside length and 6-7" outside width. And keep in mind, my measurements are +/- 1/16" not to mention I found a variance of up to 1/16" from corner to corner on the stock element. My measurements are the bigger measurements. For the stock filter on our cars, there is 1/4" flange and it is a true rectangle. Some of these have rounded corners, and at that none are a perfect fit. The k&n filters appear to have more than 1/4" flange but I dont want to make a false assumption based on an inaccurate picture. We can always fill whatever small gaps may appear with silicon, but I dont want to be the guinea pig. + I dont want to waste $40-50 on a filter not made for our cars.

I was thinking about the fog light intake Danny5 made...it would be cool to have the intake draw air in from around the passenger side headlights. Similar to the Yamaha R1 motorcycle:

The R1's headlights/intakes have taken ugly to a new level

It would not be easy, require a lot of custom fabrication, but since the headlights have that floating look anyway. The spaces between the lights would have to be hollowed out but still support the lights, then a scoop would cover the unit from behind to draw air in.

Not sure if there would be enough flow area...I know it's a crazy idea

Well, the issue with this is that the airbox draws air from the fender well. This would require you to remake the airbox.

BTW, watched my intake temps the other day, and I am only 5 degrees off ambient. I would dare say it is ambient, since the difference between 63 external air, and 68 at the turbo is pretty neglible

yea but i mean I want to be able to view the datalogs themselves. especially other peoples. compare and contrast.

Need a little help

Thanks for the great write up. I am planning on doing this mod over the weekend. I am just a little unclear with the gap at the top of the new intake (where it connects with the box). I have enlarged the picture as big as I can but cannot get a good view. I am assuming that this is to keep it from creating a suction that would pull water up the intake? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is it safe to say that barring driving through standing water (over the intake) that I will not be sucking up regular rain and the like.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wingman, thanks for your time in making the filter measurements. FYI, 33-2510 is a better fit than the stock filter. The mileage increase is phenomenal. 48.6 mpg on 469 mile trip with 2 stops.

Did you use just the filter or the DIY CAI as well? 1.4T?
