I haven't done any testing on the Sonic yet, but usually the area at the base of the windshield is a high pressure area when compared to the engine bay pressure. So on other cars that we have tested, removing the weather stripping on the back of the engine bay results in air actually going into the engine bay, which raises the pressure in the engine bay and causes more air to go out the bottom of the car.
The higher pressure in the engine bay means that the pressure delta across the intercooler/radiator and A/C condenser is lower resulting in less airflow through them.
More air under the car means more drag, and lower fuel economy.
When we get a chance I will take some pressure readings and see what they are, just wanted to put that out there as an FYI.
Also concerning the temperatures, a lot of new cars run in the 215-220 range regularly. The reason is because it helps with engine efficiency. The hotter you run the engine, the more efficient it is and the better fuel economy you get. The new corvette does not turn the fans on high until 235, the new MINI's run around 215-225 most of the time cruising down the interstate, things are not like the old days.
Hope that helps,
Dave
