New (used) Sonic, Dual CEL Codes

Just purchased a 2012 1.8L with 44,000k on 7/12. Disappointed that I didn't notice the slightly rough idle and jolty acceleration in the test drive.

These symptoms continued until this morning, when the CEL finally came on. I had initially figured the symptoms pointed to old spark plugs and ordered new ones with plans to install this Friday (the car has been drive-able).

Went to Autozone today to check out the CEL codes and got P0171 (computer recognized rich or lean condition on one engine bank only, probable cause - fuel pressure or MAF sensor, oxygen sensor defective, ignition misfire, or fuel injector issue) and P0101 (MAF, probable cause - vacuum hose off, cracked, or passage blocked, engine mechanical timing condition, throttle body intake tube loose, MAF dirty or defective).

It sounds to me like I need a new MAF sensor. I tried searching these threads but couldn't find other issues with these two codes together. I was wondering if you guys have heard of these two codes coming up at the same time, or if there's anything I should look out for.

I'm hoping the dealership will either fix this considering it's only been a couple days and they have a reputation to maintain, or because it's under the powertrain warranty. I'll update on that as soon as I hear back.

On a side note, I noticed the intake duct had a minor rip on the inside of the bend (when compressed I doubt anything harmful could get in - photo attached). I guess it could be related to this, but even if it's not, do you think I could get a new duct under the powertrain warranty?

I would appreciate your thoughts/advice/info.

that intake tube needs replaced ASAP, that could be causing your codes.

I have read in the forum more than once about those ripping and throwing codes.

The tube is for the 1.4 but i'm pretty sure if you cut it down to the right length it'll fit and if need be I can fab up a makeshift hard tube for the time being.

I'm amazed at how nice everyone is here, thanks for offering to do that. If I just purchased a cold air intake in place of the stock tube, any idea if it would void the powertrain warranty? Any GM certified intakes?

Really shouldn't void the warranty unless it is the direct cause of a component breaking. You do run the risk of it voiding it though. The GM certified intakes still haven't gone into production yet and i'm pretty sure it is going to be for the 1.4 ecotec. There is loads of information for both engine's. Just gotta look around.

You need to get a new intake pipe, I'm amazed it's cracked like that being a 2012! I would buy an aftermarket CAI as it's probably on par or cheaper than the stock pipe.

Much appreciated! I will pay the offer forward if I get the chance. Luckily the guys at the dealership checked it out, determined it was the intake hose causing the issue, and ordered a new one to be installed tomorrow without cost to me. I'm a little worried that the rough idle and acceleration was indeed the result of something like this, and that there's not something more serious going on. I will bring updates in the next couple days.

My car has about 64K miles and the CEL came on yesterday. I did not notice it running bad but I called my mechanic to see about getting it checked out. I went by today and he pulled a P0171 lean code. He checked under the hood a bit and did not see anything obviously wrong. He cleared the code and ran the tune on the computer. I drove home fine without issues, when I got home I turned off the car to open the garage door. When I got back in the CEL came back one again. After searching on here I am going to check to see if it is the same air hose that others have found cracked.

It is a shame that you can not even get some thing to last on cars now for very long. They make them last just long enough until after the warranty expires and the cars is not even paid off.

I am not very keen on Chevrolet and this is one of the main reasons. I have owned many Fords that I sold with over 120K miles with no more than regular maintenance being done. I have yet to own a Chevrolet that last over 60K with something needing replacement or repaired, usually at my cost.

I took the car in today after work. I told the mechanic about the problems other had with the air intake hose cracking. He checked it a little closer and found it was cracked halfway thru close to the MAF sensor. He replaced the hose and cleared the code but it looks like that was not was had started my CEL issue. The new hose looked like it was not made of the same rubber material as the old hose and it did not feel the same, maybe it will last longer than 65k miles. It came back on within minutes and it had a 599 fault code. He said that it was the engine temp sensor. I am going to look it up on here and see what I can find out. I tried attaching a picture I took of the old hose, hope it shows it on here.

Anyone ever experienced richer conditions with a stock air box and lean conditions with a cold air intake. Most of the sensors have been replaced, no leaks in pipes tubes, vacuum lines, valve cover or manifold. Is it pretty normal for these to run a little on the rich side ? Never encountered a car that had such drastic changes with different intakes installed on it. I guess I'd rather run it richer than leaner lol but you know what I mean

It runs lean with an intake due to incorrect mass air flow reasons. These cars need a tune for just about all intake options on the market.
