Talk to your Congressional Representative. New cars are mandated by law to include a system to alert drivers if one or more tire is under inflated. The law exists because of certain practices that led to a spate of drivers of SUV's losing control of the vehicle being driven (while driving at highway speeds) due to under inflated tires. Investigations seemed to confirm that enough American motor vehicle operators did not check tire pressures as to constitute a safety hazard. Do I agree with the findings: yes. Do I agree with the law that resulted: no. TPMS was one of a couple of choices that of late seems to be the most widely accepted choice, and I am not sure any new car intended for street use on the US public highways uses any other system as of today.

If there is I am sure we will know before the weekend concludes.

Anyway, this is my rant and I am standing by it.

I just went out and changed the position of two tires. No light, no warning, no nothing. The only thing you lose is knowing the exact location of the low tire, unless you get out and check. I can live with that!

I just left the dealer after picking up my car and the lights already on! Called onstar and they checked all 4 at 35 psi and were getting a signal from all 4..I'm not a fan.

Tell me about it. It is especially aggravating when you have to check the tire yourself because the system is not working right. Which I recommend because it appears something is wrong, and in the end I got a new sensor and that was back when the sensor was a $150 part.

Check the tires then check the software then check the components.

They're making things so much more convenient aren't they? /sarcasm

...just another method of requiring you to make a trip to the dealership if you ask me.

if memory serves, all you need is a powerful magnet and select "set tpms" or what not on the dash, its the option around the oil life one.

I think the GM "tool" itself is actually a large electro-magnet.

No, I've been watching this thread for a shade-tree solution. AFAIK, Leak down was removed for 2012 and a big magnet does not work to LEARN them. I have only seen a cheap $70 aftermarket tool. The link for the tool is in the thread someplace. ,,,on a side note, I've seen commercials for Nissan (I think) where they just ADDED the horn honking when the pressure is right gizmo. grrr.

I called my local dealer's parts counter and he said you had to come there to do it.

Is this it? Kent Moore SPX EL-50448 And had anyone tried it yet? I don't mind buying that but I'd sure like to be sure it works in 2012, if something has changed since 2011. There is a thing to select your vehicle on the first link below, but it doesn't list Sonic. it lists Spark! Funny.

I suppose having a display as to which tire is down would be nice... except when the dealer doesn't reteach the system after a tire rotation. The Sierra that I traded was only dealer serviced but the display didn't match the tire that was down. Got a nail in one rear tire and a screw in the other and the display sent me to the front tires. So Sonic system that only displays that any tire is down really isn't much different. If one is down, I have to check them all anyway.

My '06 Kawasaki ZG1000 saw the dealer exactly once - the very first scheduled service and they screwed it up completely. Now NO ONE but me works on my motorcycles, warrantied or not. However, my experience is that car dealerships are much, much better than any motorcycle dealerships. I'll take this Sonic to the Dealer for all of it's service work.

Hi Everyone,

I opened a case with GM about the TPMS. My latest OnStar diagnostic
e-mail indicated the left front tire needed air...indeed it did. However, the TPMS indicator light did not illuminate. So, I let out a lot more air, started the car and the light still did not come on!

just an FYI dealer didn't do the re-learn on mine when they rotated the tires. I know this from my flat tire @ driver front, registering on the onstar app as driver rear...

Yes, this is very puzzling to me as I have only 800 miles on my Sonic
and, of course, no tire rotation yet....I'll keep everyone up-to-date.
Chevy is due to phone me about this, today....

Did you get this corrected yet?

I think you can reset it yourself if they did everything else right as the procedure is only 2 minutes and is done while in the car
