Sedan vs. hatch?

I have two kids (Ages 12 and 5) and I went with the hatch.... surprisingly enough it has a decent "trunk" space. It has a "secret" hidey area under the flap which comes out for deeper storage. I've been able to do grocery shopping and be alright with space. I went from a Ford Edge to my Sonic RS which is a significant difference in the space department but, 21 mpg compared to almost 40???? .... I liked the hatch's exterior appearance better than the sedan...but that is my opinion.

I'm with you on the looks department! The Sonic is rated better for road noise than its competition so I don't believe that there is a difference. The hatchback has plenty of room and when you fold down the seats and remove the hatch cover it has a lot of cargo space. I use my 2012 for work and I have plenty of room. I traded a Chevy HHR Panel for the Sonic and it has saved me a lot on fuel costs!

We looked at both Sonic body styles and went with the sedan. With our daughter headed off to college, the hatch couldn't begin to hold everything she thought she needed.
Take college out of the equation and I'm not sure which way would have gone.
It would have a tough choice.

My opinion:
Hatch.
Looks, and a month after I bought it, I had a large collection of BIG boxes to carry 200 km. They wouldn't have fit in the sedan.
But mostly looks. I can't own a car I don't completely love.

The hatch's advantage
-Slightly less weight, -Shorter overall dimensions/easier parking.
-With the seats up it will hold a good deal of objects and could be argued that it holds taller cargo easier.
-With the rear seats down it can hold a ton of cargo, particularly large tall objects that would otherwise hit the window of a sedan (dresser, coffee table, big TV, etc).
The sedans advantages
-Cost, it's ~1k cheaper.
- Dedicated trunk space, for many objects the sedan can hold more cargo in the trunk without sacrificing the rear seats. Goofy sized objects or stackable cargo aside the sedan has more "trunk" space.
And appearance is subjective so there's no clear winner here.
I personally like the look of the hatch WAY more and since it was also lighter (more fasterer) and I knew it would satisfy all my cargo needs the hatch is what sits in the driveway.

Personally I went with the sedan because I was able to sit comfortably in the back. I'm 6'1" and there was NO way I could fit in the hatch. The sedan left me with an inch to spare for my knees.
I've owned 3 hatches before and loved them but the Sonic hatch just looked too drastically chopped and unfinished IMO.

My son is 6'3" and has no trouble with the rear (or front) seats in the hatchback, I wouldn't worry about the sedan vs hatch as far as passenger space goes. I am frankly amazed at how roomy the hatchback is.
SX Sonic has it exactly right though, the Sedan is A) cheaper and B) has more cargo space when you have passengers in the back. However the hatchback is a great passenger vehicle OR a great cargo vehicle, I have fit astonishing loads in there with the seats folded flat, and hardly ever use my F150 anymore. The seats also fold 60/40, so it's possible to carry a mix of large cargo and a third human... but that doesn't work as comfortably.
Finally, as far as looks go, I prefer the hatchback, but I know plenty of folks who prefer a sedan look, there's no accounting for taste.
