grinding noise while turning right and left

hello all

i just recently had my 2012 HB turbo in the dealership for a grinding noise in the steering column, it made this noise if you were sitting still or while driving.

They ended up calling up the GM engineers(so they said)

they had them disconnect the stabilizer shaft, the noise then went away.

so what they did was" the stabilizer shaft link replacement- both"

with the part number of 95941670

with a code of E9500 engineering bulletin.

and now i think everything is good and quiet, just letting everyone know.:banana:

btw, i love my sonic

I think I have the same or very similar issue

My car seems to be doing this too. But it is not all the time. It might coincide with how hot it is outside or heat buildup from driving for a while. But it definitely makes a growling kind of noise when turning to the right primarily and it will do it when sitting still or rolling slowly while parking or turning around. It does seem like something to do with the stabilization bars or steering linkages. Thank you very much for posting your experience. Glad to know they were able to figure it out. I will be taking my car in soon.

Creaking Noise During Slow Hard Turns, Too

My Turbo 6M HB is making creaking noises much like what I'm reading in this thread, too. It does seem to be heat related like a really hot day and/or after driving for 20 minutes or so. I notice it most when making a tight right turn onto my street or doing a k turn. But it is not consistent. I want to get it to the dealer but only if I can get it to make the sound otherwise they just say "cannot reproduce" and you're left stuck with the problem still. But thank you all for posting your experiences, I think this will give myself and others with this issue ammunition to get the dealers to act on the problem rather than just shrug and walk away.

I apologize for what you're experiencing and the others in this thread with steering noise. If you would like to private message me the last 8 digits of your VIN# I would be glad to see if they're any special coverages on your vehicle that are associated with this concern. In the meantime, perhaps you can visit your local GM dealer for a diagnosis. To reassure you, I will work closely with the dealership until the issue is resolved.

Steering feels loose

Anyone have issues with loose steering? This is my first electronic controlled car but it seems like there's no resistance at all when steering. Whether I'm driving straight or making turns the wheel feels so loose I feel like I might go out of control unless I hang on the wheel firmly. Driving on circular entrance ramps to highway is pretty terrifying, like I could easily oversteer b/c of the looseness. Is this normal, am I just not used to this kind of car?

what your describing is normal.
my advice is to learn the vehicle. i take corners alot faster than posted and it sticks them good.
what kinda vehicle are you coming from before the sonic?
also, the electronic steering assist is very minimal at higher speeds.

The combination of electric assist and a fairly close ratio on the rack itself, makes it feel "darty" until you get used to it. I drove one of my manual steering Sciroccos for the first time in several months last weekend. It felt slow and like it took many more turns of the steering wheel compared to my Sonic.

Long story short, I've gotten used to the Sonic and actually really like its steering. It is especially nice at an autocross because I now have to do significantly less hand over hand shuffling on the steering wheel through the slaloms and tighter radius corners.

Thanks for your responses. I was previously driving a 96 Cavalier, so it's night and day now with the Sonic. I'm glad to hear that what I'm feeling is normal and I just need to get used to it. With the old type of cars I guess you felt one with the vehicle b/c you had to put some elbow grease into maneuvering it. The Sonic feels like it practically drives itself, why does it even need me? LOL.

In regards to feedback from the steering wheel, it just feels, well "loose". Like it is so easy to make any type of turn. I'm used to feeling resistance as a gauge for how far I need to turn it. With the Sonic I have to use my eyes to sense this, before I also used my body as it felt tension on the steering wheel, if that makes sense.

You will adjust quickly. The darty sensation described is common for electric assisted power steering, particularly in sport cars and small cars. Consider it the price we pay for improved fuel economy. But I must say I like it. Of course I should since my other car is a Corvair.

Welcome to the forum Gwert,

Yes, it is normal. Here's a bit more information on the steering: All Sonics have electric, variable-assist, power rack-and-pinion
steering. Some of the benefits are:

Contributes to improved fuel economy since there are no power steering accessory drive belt or hydraulics.

Variable-assist feature provides less assist at highway
speeds for a tight, firm driving feel and more assist at
lower speeds for light-effort maneuvers, such as
while parking.

A tight 34.5' turning diameter
provides excellent maneuverability
and driving in tight parking lots.

ah...yes...i describe it as "easy" waaaaay too easy...but I've logged enough hours in gran turismo on playstation to deal with it. Day to day i really like the light steering, and have quickly gotten used to it. If the steering is really easy, and the car is darty...that's normal. If you're getting weird steering when you haven't made any input or it's NOT darty, you make an input and nothing happens, then you might have a problem...

So there you have it...loose and easy...it's normal!
