Changing the lighting setting

I looked through this thread and couldn't find anything, so if I missed it I apologize.

Was wondering if anyone knows if you can change the screen lighting setting separately from the dash lighting?

At night the Mylink screen is too bright for me. I do notice that it does dim at night when lights come on. However I would like to dim the mylink screen but not my dash lights for night.

( I noticed that you can dim the mylink from the dash light switch on the left, but it also lowers your dash lights, I would like to just lower the screen setting)

I haven't been able to find out.

That's a pretty big gripe of mine, the MyLink screen is too bright for my aging eyes.

The only way to dim it is through the instrument panel dimmer control as you found. Unfortunately I get to a point where the gauge cluster is too dim for my liking yet the MyLink screen continues to shine brightly. I keep it dimmed to a tolerable compromise between the two and can live with it for now. I guess if it gets bad enough there's always static cling window tint to go on the display. lol

I have some ideas for feature requests if GM is listening...

- Add a soft button on the screen to press and would turn off the backlighting, then another touch of the screen brings it back on.

- Add a configuration menu within MyLink to adjust the brightness levels for day and night.

- Add a physical button to toggle the display on or off. That would cost them more money than a software based solution though.

I actually can not understand why using the dimmer does not work for you. But we are all different people, so if the dimmer does not work for you than I guess it just does not work for you.

My question: is what you propose available in any production vehicle using a color touch screen?

During the day no issues, at night the thing is shining very brightly in my face.
I can dim it, but then I can barely see my dash. compare the dash brightnes to the mylink screen brightness. its about 3x brighter and any setting.

But yeah, we are all different and gripe about different things

Chrysler's Uconnect has the brightness settings for the display built into the configuration menus on the unit. At least on the Dart, it allows you to change brightness levels for both when the lights are on and off. Of course, that is a considerably more expensive unit that does more stuff than the Sonic's MyLink. I installed an aftermarket nav unit in a friend's car that also had similar configurations.

Hyundai has a button that kills the obnoxious blue backlighting on some of their monochrome LCD's. Those really need it...

I guess what bothers me that it is a bit of a distraction since the MyLink display is noticeably brighter than anything else that is illuminated in the car. It tends to draw my attention to it. If it were just a tad dimmer it would be fine.

I must say... I hate the new update... I wish I could just blame my issue on my iPhone and Siri but it was nice pushing talk once then holding to trigger Siri then asking her to send a message... She then would show me the message... Seems unsafe, of course... But she's horrible at sending a message and I prefer to proof read it... Since the update, no ability to proof read... And now the car locks me out of my phone too? Super annoying. Why can't I just make the decision to text, drive and know the risks on my own? Damn you GM.

PS BringGo kinda sucks too.

My question is why can't I make the decision to get buzzed then text while driving, that way I could double my chances of involving others in an untoward mishap.

I just registered to also report my experience with the new MyLink version and it's integration with Siri.

It's great that it wants to dim the iPhone screen and I don't have any issues with that. However, I no longer get turn-by-turn directions from my phone like I did before. I tried just Bluetooth, just usb, and both. Neither Apple Maps or Google Maps would alert me to an upcoming turn. Siri would find me directions and display them(albeit I couldn't see due to the dimmed screen). It did light up my phone briefly when a turn was coming but it wasn't consistent.

I love the "official" functionality of working with Siri now but I do need this function. What happened?

Update: I discovered that directions are working but are only broadcast over Bluetooth. When hooked up by USB/in iPod mode, there's no voice directions at all over the radio or through the iPod mode.

This seems poorly conceived. Why would I be able to activiate Siri while listening to the AM/FM/XM radio but not hear turn by turn directions from it? Why do I have to listen to my bluetooth music in order to hear my directions?

Siri worked better prior to this latest update when I could get directions over whatever source I was listening too. The only improvement this update has brought so far was to bring the button presses down to 1 instead of 2. I much prefer the previous functionality.

I have a USB flash drive question I've been unable to find the answer to...

I plugged in an 8GB San Disk Cruzer with a tiny amount of music on it (like 1GB or less). I think some of the file types were not supported, but many were.

The message I got on the MyLink screen was "Unsupported device found."

I cannot find this message in the manual... it says

When a device is not supported, the message "No supported data found. You can safely disconnect the device" appears.

I did find info on the compression rate thinger here, and all the files were 320 or less...

Still, shouldn't it have recognized the supported file types that were on the Cruzer, and ignored the unsupported ones? (or does it not work like that?) Or is the problem with the Cruzer flash drive itself?

I hopefully will be able to experiment today, will have the same Cruzer with ONLY supported file types on it this time. Hope it works, but still wonder what the issue was in the meantime, if anybody knows? Thanks.

I had a similar experience with a 32GB thumb drive I purchased. I took the thumbdrive, reformatted FAT32 on my PC (complete, not a quick format)... Added my music, plugged into the USB in my Sonic. Problem solved.

Maybe try that.

update: have only supported file types on the Cruzer now, and it works just fine. No more problem.

I sent an email since Monday and I have not received any reply at all from GM. I will be taking it tomorrow to the dealer for the second time due to the myLink dashboard locking up issue and the fourth time including the BringGo updates. Radio is totally unusable including hands-free calling. Even without the bluetooth enabled, during an afternoon with a temperature of 80-90F degrees, the radio locks up 2 minutes in after the engine has been turned on.

Also have a new problem, but it is a non-mylink issue. After a rain, I have rainwater leaking inside the front passenger coming from a vent underneath the glovebox compartment.

I am getting pissed off with how many times I have to take it back to the dealership taking into account that this car isn't a year old yet.

No, I have been waiting for them to call me about the radio unit. They said they ordered it (Saturday) and supposed to be there either today or tomorrow. They 'fixed' the leaking issue but who knows if it worked until the next rainy day. I found the PI myself from this forum and gave it to them. Ironically, when I went back to get my car, myLink barely turned on. It was locked up on a faint myLink screen. No radio, no nothing. They left it parked outside and the temperature that day was around 90-100F. It was winter when I bought this car, so I am wondering if replacing the radio would even fix it or there is something wrong the way it is exposed to the weather or heat.

I basically just want to get a refund on this car if I could and buy a car that has a better GPS system.

The service people do not work for Chevrolet. Each dealership is a franchise. Chevrolet, to my knowledge, owns less than one dealership nationwide.

I know Chevrolet had a scheduled training for the MyLink update. I saw the notice when at a dealer to get the update before the training date. I was at the dealer on a Monday and the training was that Thursday.

I agree it is sad that there are dealers who do not even meet minimal expectations, but most to a very good job, at least for me. Am I a Chevrolet apologist? I don't think so, and I doubt that Chevrolet thinks so.

I don't know about a better GPS system as it seems to me the GPS depends on external factosr such as satellites and microwave towers. Does GPS work on my Sonic? Yep. Could it work better? I have no idea. It works and beyond that I wouldn't know.
