That is what ofer says.
As for theft deterrence, that feature using the VIN has been a part of Chevy for 15 or 20 years. The problem (based on what I have been told) is a component, say a radio, can be reprogrammed to accept a different VIN at a dealership. Anybody else see a problem with that?

Reprogramming for same vin is possible on NEWER vehicles. This can happen for updates because it does not rewrite over the vin info. It checks the vin in programming to vin in module. The Vin info is usually LOCKED in after 5 key cycles in the module and only the rebuilder can clear it out. So when it is installed in another vehicle it locks, because you need to turn on the power to view the data and it needs to be told by the dataline to Wakeup and start working it at that time compare vin and locks. It is a catch 22. It is a boat anchor to most people now...
