Who uses the arm rest?

Up. It is a terrible design, set at a single height above the seat, which means it fits only a limited range of human, since everyone's arm is different proportionally to the length of their torso, and everyone's torsos are different lengths anyway.
For me, this means it sits about two and a half inches above comfortable, and it doesn't matter where I adjust the seat, because the butt-to-elbow distance remains constant (and yes, I do know the difference... butt goes in seat, elbow on armrest!)
I plan to delete, finding a nice substitute would be nice but I've gotten used to not having one, delete would be fine... and save weight!

My Hyundai Accent had a similar design but they did a far better job at positioning the armrest. I still use it frequently, however the Sonic's execution of this could be better. It's perfectly usable for me, though seemingly a touch high which can make it a bit awkward.
The worst part is these things get in the way of the cup holder when in use, but I've had years of training for getting around that.

I really don't use it but I keep it in the down position and have my arm resting to the side of it. I thought since I didn't actually use it i'd put it in the up position but I realized it doesn't feel as comfortable.

My Hyundai Accent had a similar design but they did a far better job at positioning the armrest. I still use it frequently, however the Sonic's execution of this could be better. It's perfectly usable for me, though seemingly a touch high which can make it a bit awkward.

This is Swordsmith's point though, your Hyundai was better positioned for you but not someone else.
The Sonic's is actually a comfortable height for me but I don't use it. I don't remember why though all I remember is it ended up being annoying for some reason.
Maybe it blocks the parking brake?

I use mine every drive. I place my elbow on it and hold the steering wheel, perfectly comfortable.
If I rest my arm on it like a traditional armrest It's not comfortable. So I spent 10 secs finding a way to make it pleasant. Now I like the position of the rest.
I still think it could be engineered better

I use it every time I drive. I'm 6 foot 2. It's perfect height for me.

That is a good point, and there were quite a few owners of that car who couldn't stand to use it either just like we have here. I was just lucky that it worked out in my favor I suppose.

I use mine, but the nose/front of the armrest tilts down too much to be comfortable for me. When I get some time and ambition together, I am going to remove it, weld a shim to the down stop, and hopefully raise the front of the armrest ~2 inches. It also could stand to be a bit longer too.

Whoa. I'm 6'1" and it's WAY low for me. To the point it's not worth the trouble of putting down.

This thread could explain better if people mentioned there seat positions.
If you lean your chair back like some high school noob, then it's going to be in the wrong place.
I have my seat bottomed out on the height adjustment, my chair is just a few clicks less than all the way slid back and my seat back is just a tad back from upright. The armrest supports my forearm nicely while my hand rests on the shifter, ready to pounce.
When I'm not in shift ready mode, my elbow is on the armrest and my hand is resting on my kiwis.
