It's not "custom", it's a Chinese aftermarket? product for the Japanese Aveo.

Here's a picture I just snapped of it in the dark. I had to remove a ton of color from the picture to even be able to see it. I'll take better pictures when I get off work in the morning. It blends a bit better with the black pseudo-leather.

I'm 6'2" and it's pretty much just right. I do wish it was longer.

This thread could explain better if people mentioned there seat positions.

If you lean your chair back like some high school noob, then it's going to be in the wrong place.

I have my seat bottomed out on the height adjustment, my chair is just a few clicks less than all the way slid back and my seat back is just a tad back from upright. The armrest supports my forearm nicely while my hand rests on the shifter, ready to pounce.

When I'm not in shift ready mode, my elbow is on the armrest and my hand is resting on my kiwis.

I slide my seat almost all the way back and lean my seat back awfully far. With the seatback tilted back the armrest follows and pitches up at far too great of an angle.

Turn off the rap music and put your seat up yo.

I never use the armrest. I usually have both hands on the wheel anyways. I MIGHT use it on really long highway trips.

I use it every time I drive. I'm 6 foot 2. It's perfect height for me.

Ditto. I'm 6'7" and it's perfect height for me as well. Use it every day.

See 6'2" and it fits perfect and 6'1" and it is wrong are because we don't all have the same torso to arm length ratio, that's what I was trying to describe. In particular, the distance from your feet to the top of your head doesn't really count here, the key is the distance from your butt to your elbow. You could have a 4 foot torso and a 3'6" upper arm, leaving 6", your brother could have a 4 foot torso but a 3"4 inch upper arm, leaving 8" and your sister could have a 3 foot torso and a 2' upper arm leaving a full 12". The fact that you and your brother both push the seat all the way down and all the way back and your sister pushes hers up and forward to the stop don't matter at all, because the armrest moves with the seat, so it's still the same distance for each of you.

I will grant that seat position does matter for the elbow to gearshift distance or the elbow to wheel distance. And I will grant that there's some flexibility in exactly how you hold your arm, but my point is, it's still tuned to a limited subset of human body/arm types, great for those of you it happens to fit, but not adjustable to fit the rest of us. Who tested the ergonomics on this thing, a set of identical sextuplets?

Particularly funny to me because other than the armrest, the Sonic seems to accomodate an astonishing range of body types, if you look at some of the other threads, or even just glance at 5'6" me, my 5'2" daughter, and my 6'3" son, as well as our friend who is my height but about twice as wide, all of whom find this to be one of the most comfortable cars we've ever been in.

When I first test drove the Sonic, I had the armrest down and it felt like it was comfortable in the right place. But I found that it is in the way when you try and buckle the seat belt or try and use the emergency brake for parking. Now I just leave it in the up position and it hasn't moved for months. (5'6")

I only use it on long trips when I don't have to shift as much.

Same for us, I'm 5 10 and wife is 5 8.

I am 6' 4 and its a little low for me...i kinda wish it was about 2-3 inches wider as i am a fatty and my arm sits on the outer edge of it ;-p and about another 2-3 inches longer....I kept re-engineering it in my head....I wouldn't mind that Chinese knock off but my son wouldn't have any where to throw his drinks when i am driving him around....

i also use mine more as an elbow rest. I wish the drivers door top was padded because i also use that.

It would require new high density foam, and new "leather", all of which any upholstery shop could do.

I plan to eventually plastiderp the metal. I never see it and passengers rarely notice it so I don't see it as a big deal.

I'm 5'6" and I sit pretty far back from the wheel. I don't use it and end up with my elbow up high on the edge of the passenger seat and my hand like in my hair, or it's down draped on the shift knob or on my leg.

Hubby uses it every time.
