I don't even have 15K on my Sonic and I had mine replaced... they started doing it at 10K but just waited until it got bad enough and grouped it with some other problems I am having with my Sonic... but that's for another thread.

My 2012 Sonic LT Sedan is making the clunking noise now as well. I drive 100+ highway miles everyday with no backroad driving. I am over 40K now. Not happy with this issue. I have not rec'd any recall notice for the suspension. I guess I should call the dealer or GM.
I have had the airbag recall, the w/w hose recall and [had an evap canister valve or selenoid go and the tech stripped mounting bolts so I had a loaner for a day as well. I hope this is not what I should expect in the future...

It's not a recall, recalls are technically Federally mandated, almost exclusively centered around a safety concern, and require the O.E.M. to attempt to contact the owner.

Things like the sway bar link fall under what is typically called a service bulletin. It is manufacturer initiated and does not require the O.E.M. to contact the owner (occasionally they will depending on the concern). Basically the company knows there's a recurring problem, releases a bulletin to the dealers/technicians informing them of the problem, causes, symptoms, and recommended repair.

If the customer comes in with symptoms associated with the bulletin the tech does a quick confirmation and then goes thru the warranty process, which is more straight forward on the tech side than other warranty repairs. Sometimes the techs are supposed to check for bulletin problems any time the car is brought in. It's also not uncommon for afflicted components to be given an extended warranty or serviced for free outside of the normal warranty period.


By all means set up an appointment and get the car checked out and try not to worry about it being a common trend. I'm certainly not worried about my car and have been relatively issue free for almost 40k miles, most of them extensively modified.

I got mine done this morning when I had the oil changed. I don't ever recall hearing anything unusual from the front, but after they were replaced my Sonic feels slightly better in tight turns. Not much, but I could tell.

Had mine done this morning. If your service advisor tells you it's an hour job, don't believe him. It takes 2.5 hours. The car feels better for sure now that it is done though.

And if your service advisor is having trouble finding the recall number, the recall number on the paper I was given when I left is: V2718-0.9HR

I go in on Thursday! For this and other things...i have loaner car setup already! I hope they have the part! Lol..also wipers not clearing windshield front or back mot contacting windshield..also our muffler is rusty as heck! If they wont replace, I will sand, prime, paint with rust oleom rust proof high temp paint! Will let you all know! G

I went in to get a front left clunk noise diagnosed.... they told me it was nothing...


I pointed to the TSB and they said that it's only for 2012 sonics, not 2013...

Well crap went in to get my links replaced today and I'm out of warranty....... By 300 miles which isn't even a week if driving! DOH.

Missed the boat. Asked if GM would cover since there's a bulletin on it and the mileage is so close. They said nope. Bummer, I woulda liked new links and I'm sure the tech woulda liked some easy book time, had the bulletin number and everything ready for em.

Should have been more aware of total mileage.

Got mine changed today at 10,000 miles. I didn't notice a problem with them at this mileage, but they were changed anyway while vehicle was in for a laundry list of other concerns.

Sounds like a greedy dealer. They make more off of CP than warranty. Most dealers I have been around would be more than willing to take care of it on goodwill. Especially knowing how big of an issue it is. I have my second replacement set sitting on the counter waiting to go in. I do not even bother with trying for warranty since the car is lowered. I also dont really trust the dealer to work on my car anymore.

My turn. 2013 hatchback 1.4 turbo 6 speed LTZ. The clunk has been getting progressively worse and I finally couldn't stand it any longer. I love the car and one of it's best features is it's handling and another is it's quietness, until recently. I'm just under the warranty cutoff at 35,400 miles.

They performed recall 13128 Software Enhancement Update to the MyLink radio and identified the clunk I took the car in for as the front swaybar links. They did not note a recall and they have to order the links. So, after two days I get the car back with a radio software update but otherwise not repaired. I get to have someone follow me to/from the dealer again and arrange alternative transportation to/from work again next week. Hurray.

Yep. This is the one thing I really dislike about the Sonic.
It took me four trips to the dealer to finally get rid of the click when steering to the left. First the links were replaced. The sound was mostly gone but still something was up. Took it back again…this time the left strut mount was replaced…problem solved opcorn:
Now I'm beginning to hear a little click on the right side when I steer to the left at times…:blankface: whatever I DO NOT feel like going back again at the moment. I'll just wait until I go for a tire rotation again in a couple of months. I'll still be under warranty. I feel like the dealer will be like "oh my god its this guy with the click sounds again". Thank goodness their is a good guy over there at my dealer that listens to my concerns though.

I had MOOG K750519 end links installed since I did not want the junk GM part. They got rid of the clunking noise finally, they are greasable and have a lifetime warranty.
