SuperCharger for the 1.8????

Not having unlimited funds, and expecting that most Sonic buyers are similarly constrained, I am thinking along the lines of what could be done to a Sonic with a 1.8L. An advantage of Vortech is the smaller versions can be installed without an intercooler and based on what I have seen the ProCharger is designed to be installed w/ an intercooler. The difference is pricing is considerable: $2100 for the small Vortech plus installation braces and $5-6000 for the ProCharger including the intercooler and kit (except no one has a kit for the Sonic) but it looks like either brand might be feasible.
You do get more of a power boost with the ProCharger, but then we come back to the rest of the drive train. And the small Vortech may not need upgrades to the engine internals.
Both are good choices.
Eaton screw types might be if one existed that would fit on the engine but I am pretty sure would need a high rise hood to fit in the engine bay. If someone is actually interested I would suggest contacting a speed shop that specializes in small crs such as ZZPerformance.com or DDMWorks.com. I would like to see it work, but I know I am not going to try (been there, done that so to speak).

You could always set it up for a RMR setup (rear-mid engine, rear-wheel drive) like Peugeot (sp?) did by putting a V6 in a family hatch...
Wouldn't the brackets for a Cruze work if you can find it? It's been out for longer and has more tuning support right now. IIRC, they share the drivetrains part for part.

The engine in that picture looks like a 1.4 to me. Maybe this is an upgrade designed to replace the current 1.4 turbocharger? If it is for the 1.8 that is a good price.

Since HEP makes that kit, they do the fab in house. I'm going to contact them and see if they can make a turbo manifold for the 1.8, as the rest should bolt on.

If I remember right, Steve at Insane Motor Sport (a vender on this site) is not too far from HEP and also my memory says he has either approached them with the idea of a turbo for the 1.8 or is working with them on developing one.
The 1.8 internals are a concern and that is why I believe a small supercharger boosting to 6-8lbs would be the better choice. 6-8lbs of supercharged boost would be the equivalent of around 14lbs of turbocharged boost and can be done without upgrading internals or requiring an intercooler.

I'm sure it could be done easier than a super charger. I have to agree that you will have to tone down the turbo for this engine to around 8 PSI for it to hold together but a super charger small enough for these engines to turn probably wont produce much more than that anyways. I'm not too familiar with super chargers, so I could be way off.

I am somewhat familiar with supercharging a compact sized car.
Space in the engine bay would be the limiting factor, but there are small centrifugal superchargers on the market right now. The 1.8 would need a new exhaust manifold fabricated to be turbocharged but would only need some brackets to be supercharged.

Intake pressure is intake pressure. The method by which it is compressed does not change it's density or volume. And when the method of compression is driven by the crank it actually creates a parasitic drag.
Turbocharging is more power efficient than supercharging and is a better choice for all applications except where instant boost is a requirement and the effects of parasitic drag are negligable (read; Big Frickin V8).

This will be my only response to Opticon as I have no desire to prove anything. Both super and turbo charging are parasitic. The turbocharger thru the exhaust and the supercharger off the cam and that is why it takes more turbo boost to have the same effect as supercharger boost.
Other than that Opticon is correct.

I thought the cam shaft ran off an internal belt/chain that was turned by the crank and the crank drives all accessories (which would include the S/C'r). The cam/cams only job is to push the valves open and closed. Granted nothing will work with out all of it working together. Maybe in wrong and have no clue about the basic working of a combustion engine.
