From what I understand though, they axed it for the reasons you mentioned above, most of all the cost.

Want to spool a 600hp turbo before 6 grand without anti-lag? Only one way to do it without nitrous.

"twincharged" setups have been used on Cavaliers and found to be lower performing than just a properly sized turbo for the application. If a M45 could be adapted to work on a 1.8 it would make for a lot of fun. The M45 is also capable of supporting over 200 WHP. Centrifugal superchargers have their place, but personally I feel a roots style would be better for this application.

I think the roots style sets on top of the engine, in between the engine and the hood, and I am not sure there is room for the install unless the hood is higher rising than it looks.

Other than that, the M45 looks like a good choice.

On inline engines roots style blowers typically hang off the side. This makes clearance even more critical. Custom hoods can alleviate height issues but stretching an engine bay is pretty time consuming and expensive.

I feel like I'm restating the obvious, but with the intake manifold being on the back of the engine, I don't see a lot of room for a roots-style supercharger between the block and firewall.

i think there is enough room if a properly designed manifold is used. The M45 is tiny.


Ever look at the engine bay of a Mini Cooper S with the S/C? If they can fit one there, we should have no problem fitting on on a 1.8 in a Sonic.

If you are thinking the other ECOtec models sold in the US, I highly doubt it. Maybe a Z18XE or a handful of the A16LE_ engines. Seeing as how the LNF, LSJ, L61, and whatever the 2.4 engines are called use a different layout for the manifolds, I suspect the ports are also completely different, either way they probably would not fit between the engine and firewall without getting in the way of something.

The lsj lnf l61 all have interchangeable intake manifolds as well as some Saab engines and other things. It's would be neat if it worked out

don't get me started its a dumb design in my opinion why wouldn't u have the exhaust int he back so it just flows n the intake infront so its right there.. cheap ass mofos

I doubt that since in the J bodies (third gen) three of the engines had the exhaust at the back and two had it at the front. The two at the front were the lowest power option for their time. Seeing as how the basic engine our A18XER is based on has been in use for quite some time, finding the first platform the basic engine platform was used in would be the best chance of finding out why the exhaust is at the front.

I don't feel this disproves what I said.
Obviously you can put it near the firewall but it will increase noise and heat transferred into the passenger compartment. Or maybe not.

Perhaps it originally had to do with keeping a short cable or even mechanical linkage to the throttlebody or carb. Maybe they had the exhaust piped into the intake originally to help heat it when it was carbureted. I don't know how it was done on 4 cylinders, but on a lot of V8s they had a valve that would close on one side and force exhaust through passages in the intake to the other head to heat the intake faster and I'm not talking about EGR. Perhaps this is somehow related.
