If they can cram a JRSC into a Honda prelude 4th gen with the goofy pully setup I cant see a reason why they couldn't do it with a sonic....anything is possible with $. But in all honesty, this is a sub 20k car that produces sub 140hp on an economy based motor, I feel most manufactures would not waste there time in $ cost or development for a sonic. I still plan to keep my fingers crossed for decent motor improvements in the future, but hopefully before then i can trade my car in for an RS ;-p.

Hey guys im new here so im not sure if im coming in late or if this is the wrong place for this however you guys seem pretty knowledgeable. i have built countless v8s im all about my chevys so its all bowtie over here. a few things i had to say. the vortec engine that you guys were talking about earlier being a 305 or350 typically is simply a small block chevy with vortec heads. the vortec heads were standard 2 valve setup 1 in 1 ex however the "vortec" is the kidney bean shaped combustion chamber that is in the heads that promoted a pretty decent power gain. also the valves were slightly larger usually 2.02/1.6 compared to the 1.9/1.45 valves

onto sonics now... i dont have a clue about the engine or trans specs in these cars, ive also never built anything fwd. although im interested. 7 camaros in my life multiple s10s and blazers and now fwd. so i may sound stupid but bear with me please. the block style. what is this called. its not based on ls or lt or gen 3 blocks. is the block on the sonics a similar block to any other 4 cyl chevy? in other words would any other chevy 4 cyl bolt up to the trans in the sonics. or does anyone know of any parts that can be shared such as cobalt internals or aveo parts possibly or maybe a similar engine style that we could use as parts donors. we have a 1.8 2012 hatch ltz. any feedback or help would be great. the aftermarket is very limited however if we can get the info together to be resourceful we may be able to build or own engines out of existing components. thanks guys steve

This doesn't have much in depth info but it's something. also note the 2.0T the LHU replaced the LNF and will be replaced by the LTG, all 2.0T and all non interchangeable redesigns; I mention this just to illustrate how even essential the same engines are not always interchangeable. :GM Inside News Forum - Engine Guide

The trans between the Cruze and Sonic are interchangeable even between the 1.8 and 1.4t engines. It's also likely that engine parts are swappable with some of the overseas version of the same engine; as in a better manifold from an astra xxxx 1.4t will fit a sonic 1.4t or 1.8 to 1.8. Other than that we're largely at the whims of the aftermarket which appear to be developing quite nicely.

Modding a 4cyl is no different than modding a single cylinder, V6, V8, or V12 in principle. It's all about improving airflow, matching that with the right amount of fuel, and making sure components are up to the task of handling additional power. The same methods apply across the board. The difference is in the details as each engine design has certain areas that are inferior to others and areas that are stronger. For instance maybe a particular engine responds more to an ECM tune and another Loves a manifold back exhaust and is indifferent to an intake. This is where being apart of a forum is really helpful, it's much easier to see what works and what the good brands are.

The 2.4 cobalt ss n/a uses the same trans as the 1.8

No it doesnt. The 1.8 uses a F17 where as the Cobalt uses a F23 or 35.

As far as I know, the 1.8 is the biggest engine they put the f17 on.

You're right...I was half asleep when I did my research...does any body know if the trans from the 1.4 will bolt fit in the 1.8 with minimal fab?

SCCA class rules have kept me from doing the swap so far. Trans, cables, shifter, new clutch, and lighter flywheel should be all that I will need.

Yeah. The 6t40 trans is basically the same as the 6t45(has heavier-duty components) and the 6t45 comes in the 2008 Malibu with the 2.4 LE5, and they allready make turbo and supercharger kits for these
