Strange. Sounds like your car has issues. My 1.4 manual does not suffer from ANY of the conditions you described.
No issues. Just stuff the factory has done. The throttle lag is programmed into the VCM. Every car from about 2005 and up has it. Most people just don't notice it. Drive a car without it and you'll see the difference. It also makes blipping the throttle to downshift more difficult. Many people have complained about it.
Many people have also complained about the DMF. It adds weight, complexity, increases replacement cost, and achieves nothing.

I would have no issue ending up with the exact same Sonic I have now. for a short time I did look into trading in and getting a turbo for a couple reasons. One of the biggest was the fact that I am fairly picky about exhaust sound. I am struggling to get the sound I want from my 1.8. A turbo would solve a good chunk of the issue. The second reason is that I do greatly enjoy power and with the current options the 1.4 market allows for more power.

Kind of strange.
The Sonic is known to be affordable to buy, affordable to drive and affordable to own.
A WRX costs a fortune for insurance and gas as well as costs quite a bit more to buy. A truck isn't even in the same category.

I hope you don't mean that obnoxious buzzing sound that ricers have.
However, the exhaust from a tuned VW or Audi sounds pretty nice.

You're missing my point. I said if I was buying in the same category I would probably buy another sonic.
That said I don't think I would buy another sub-compact.

I have settled on a set up that eliminates that sound under my normal driving conditions. Saddly I still have the annoying buzz at high throttle input and RPM. Itis a small displacement naturally aspirated 4 cylinder. Not a whole lot I can do about that sound i guess.

I reeally like the Golf TDI though. If the GTD version makes it to the U.S. ohh man...
Same here! And yes, a Golf TDI is the only car (well, Golf and a Mazda 3) that I'd consider instead of a Sonic. But there is no point getting a Golf 6 when the 7 will be here next year; and Mazda 3 is just too big and pricey for my needs. So, it's a yes.
PS a VW Polo is probably a more direct competitor for the Sonic, and may be coming to the US in the next couple of years...
PPS I'm hoping to resolve the vibration and shaking issue in the car, because that "yes" will turn into "maybe" or "no" depending on how that gets resolved

But had I known back then what I know now, I would have held back on purchasing my 2012 model and instead waited for the 2014 model year.

I'm the same way. By the time I've worn this car out, I doubt Chevy will even be making the Sonic anymore.
However, my next car will still be a hatchback similar to the Sonic.

What does a 2014 have that a 2012 doesn't? I thought the only thing was buggy mylink. Or maybe its not buggy, but my assumption right now is that it is.
Everyone knows what I hate about my Sonic the most and it has to do with the word "eject".

From my point of view, it's like chasing any tech out there. You buy a cell phone today and 3 months later a new model of it comes out with better or improved features. Even if you wait the 3 months and then buy it, then 3 months after that a new one yet will come out.
You can't chase technology, unless you plan to spend a LOT of money, like with phones, PC, etc. Even more so with a car. You buy one now and next year a facelift/redesign comes out.
Meh. Buy what you like and enjoy what you have.

Anyone who owns a manual, if you had to do it over again, would you buy the auto?
I love my car, but find the 5spd to be really clunky. If I would have known about the clunky manual, I probably would have bought another automatic.

I'd still buy the manual. Even knowing that I would end up with a grunt in 2nd AND 4th gears.
